   Ch 4: Trouble Ahead

I spent most of the next morning lying in Jake’s warm and secure embrace with the sun beating down on us through the trees. I whimpered when he started to detach himself gently, the others wanting to talk to him about something important as they stayed higher up in the trees, leaving us to the make-shift nest Jake had built for us last night.

“ I’ll be back soon,” he said gently as I continued with my quiet whimpers and whines of protest, but I scowled up at him as I huffed. He smiled at me, his green eyes sparkling as they caught the sunlight.

“ Your so adorable when you frown,” he teased, and I blushed as I rolled my eyes, smiling back at him as he leaned down and placed his moist lips against mine, kissing me softly for a few minutes before we heard a chorus of loud roars.

We smiled at each other as we both new that that was the others telling Jake to hurry up.

“ I’ll be back soon,” he repeated before he disappeared into the leaves of the trees but I sighed as I sat up and pulled a green tank top and a pair of black short-shorts on.

I stilled just as I finished putting white ankle-socks on as I heard the faint sound of baby cries and meows from somewhere below in the Canopy Layer, and I slid down tree branch after tree branch to get too where the sounds were coming from as quickly as possible.

If it was on its own, the poor thing would need someone to look after it or else it would get hurt or die. I didn’t want that to happen.

I walked along one of the large tree branches when I got very close to the noise, but I gasped as a net came up around me and lifted me into the air when I stepped onto it accidentally. I looked around quickly as I gripped the stealth ghost net that was caging me in, whimpering softly as I couldn’t escape, all I could do was look out through the small gaps in the net as four guys around the age of nineteen came out of the shadows of the trees and dropped down onto the tree branch I had once been standing on.

I whimpered Chris’s name as I stared at him wide eyed , a few tears rolling down my cheeks as I tried to escape again. All I did was tangle myself in the net a little more and I whimpered softly, wanting Jake.

I watched as one of the boys pulled out a phone from under a leaf and turned the baby cries off, glancing at me as a smile crept onto his face. Another boy clapped the boy standing next to Chris on the back, making him smirk.

“ You were right, it did attract her,” he said and he studied me as Chris looked at me unemotionally. I suddenly felt dumb for falling for their simple trap.

“ Of course it would, she’s in heat which means her mothering instincts would kick in more than normal,” he replied, sending Chris a smirk and making me realize that Chris had went back and told them that I was in heat once me and Jake had left him.

I growled at him lowly, but the boy who seemed like he was the leader chuckled, coming closer and pulling the net down a little so he could look at my face a little more clearly. A small whimper left my lips and he smirked, letting the net go as he stepped back and I gripped the net a little tighter as it swung from side to side, swinging away from the trees so I was dangling over open space.

I shrieked and tried to escape again as I panicked, crying and whimpering as the net started to slow down its swinging from side to side very slowly.

“ Is this really necessary?” Chris said impatiently as the boy came back over to me but he rolled his eyes before studying me again, his hazel-brown eyes meeting and holding my wide-eyed gaze. I’m pretty sure he could tell I was scared out of my mind.
