"I don't know Max" I said as I stood in front of the testing center in town square. "I don't think I can do this."
"Dude you turn 18 tomorrow, you don't have a choice!" He said with a snort "Unless you want to join the underground. You're not joining the undergrounding." He whisper yelled at me after a shrugged in his direction. "We could literally never speak to each other again!"
"Chill out I'm just joking." I said with a laugh "But I'm freaking out this test determines the rest of my life."
"Come on." He said as he grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the building. "The test is kind of weird but it's super easy, It's really not that big of a deal."
"That's because you haven't been matched yet!" I said glaring at him "You don't even know your placement. I can't believe that doesn't scare you." I said as we walked up to the front desk.
"I asked them to delay turning it on until you took the test. Surprise!" He said as we stopped at the front desk. When I looked at him confused he continued. "It wasn't that hard actually, you can get time extensions if you have reasons. I explained some of your situation and that I didn't want to get taken away from you if I could avoid it. They understood and said they could wait until you turned 18 but no later."
I smiled at him as we walked up to the front desk the lady behind the counter looked up and said, "Good morning folks how can I help you?"
"I have an appointment to the take the placement test at ten today. My name is Raelynn Carter." I said.
"Congratulations you must be so excited!" She said as she started typing into her computer.
"Something like that." I mumbled under my breath only to have Max stomp on my foot.
"Why don't you have a seat, and someone will be out shortly to assist you." She said pointing to the waiting room.
"She said sit." Max said as he sat down and pulled out a magazine.
"Shut up." I said pacing around the room and ringing my hands together. All to soon my name was called and I think I heard Max say something as I followed a man back to another room.
"There's no need to be nervous." he said sitting down on one of does spinny chair's doctor's sit in. "Before you take the test you will watch a short video that will explain everything to you. You have probably seen it multiple times throughout your life but we have to follow protocol. After that I will explain a few things to you, hook you up to this weird looking machine, and you will work your way through a completely painless easy test." he said as he grabbed a remote to start the cheesy film I could probably repeat in my sleep.
The film opened to a man walking out onto the screen. His name was William Velcons and he was our first leader. "Welcome to our new world." He said throwing his hands wide. "Nobody likes to have someone else control their lives. But in our changing world control is something we now need. I believe our ancestors called the government Uncle Sam—"
"I think we should call it Grandma Nelly." I whispered under my breath rolling my eyes.
"Doesn't that just so much more caring and warmer? And that's what are government is today because 100 years ago we didn't need the government but today we do. When Jared Henry released the toxins that eliminated over 3/4 of our great nation and changed the chemical makeup of our bodies we were forced to take action. Unfortunately, the rest of the world has cut us off but the technical advances our people had and have developed have made it possible for us to survive. Our government and scientist stepped up to the plate and created the flawless placement test to save our people." The screen faded out to show five people standing next to each other. "Between your 17th and 18th birthday you must travel to the nearest testing center to complete the placement test. When you arrive, the test will be explained in further detail but I will tell you now that it is quick, simple, and painless. When the test is completed you will be placed into one of five categories, either a dominant or a submissive, a caretaker or a little, or a nurturer. Once you are placed in your respective category you will also be placed with your ideal match where you will live happily ever after." As William continued to talk the four people on the screen moved around the screen in response to his words before they faded out and he walked back on screen. "It just makes me so excited." He said clapping his hands together as the screen faded out.
