"April her temperature is through the roof." I said into the telephone as I bounced Rae on my hip. She was crying on my shoulder and worked up from lack of sleep. "And she hasn't eaten anything since I brought her home from the hospital 4 days ago."
"Did you try the crackers and applesauce?" April asked as I walked around the room.
"Yes, she just threw it all back up." I said in exasperation. "just like everything else I gave her."
"Did you call her doctor?" She asked "What did they say?"
"They said it was probably a reaction to the antibiotic they prescribed for her stitches." I said looking at the bottle I threw in the trash "they told me to stop giving it to her and call back if she doesn't get better by morning. But she's miserable now April." I said kissing Rae's forehead and cringing at the heat I felt.
"How you feeling baby?" I asked when she looked up at me with big watery eyes.
"I tummy urt ommy." she said through her tears.
"I know peanut." I said walking into the living room "What do you say you me and little five take a nice long nap in here and maybe you will feel better when we wake up."
"Kay ommy." She whispered as she continued to cry in my shoulder. I said bye to April before I leaned back in the recliner and popped my feet up. I sang a song in her ear and rubbed her back until her tears turned to sniffle and her breath evened out. I had no intentions of falling asleep but next thing I new she was stirring in my arms and slowly sitting up to look at me.
"Hey baby." I said looking at her as she stretched in my arms "How are you feeling?"
"I no know Mommy." She said with shrug.
"You don't know." I said smiling as I reached up and placed my hand on her still warm but no longer burning forehead and cheeks. "My favorite little cheeks don't feel so hot anymore. I sure hope that means my favorite little girl is feeling better. What do you say we try to put some food in your tummy."
"No tank you Mommy." She said as I carried her to the kitchen "I no hungy."
"Not even for dino nuggets?" I asked "But there your favorite." I said when she shook her head no. We took the rest of the day pretty easy, watching movies and coloring since Rae wasn't up for much more. She wasn't up for eating either.
"How about spaghetti?" I said "You can make the biggest mess you want."
"No tank you Mommy." She said from her spot on my lap as we watched the little mermaid.
"Do you want pancakes?" I asked an hour later "Mommy doesn't care how much syrup you use."
"No tank you Mommy." She said looking up at me with a smile before going back to the picture she was coloring.
"Do you want to make cookies with Mommy?" I asked an hour later completely desperate.
"No tank you Mommy." She said after a few seconds thought.
"Okay baby." I said pausing the movie and shutting her coloring book. "You haven't eaten in almost 5 days so Mommy really needs you to eat. You can have anything you want."
"No tank you Mommy." She said looking at me with big eyes. I watched her for a second before I pressed play on her movie and walked to the kitchen and grabbed a bowl of applesauce and sat next to her.
"Come here peanut." I said pulling her onto my lap. I waited until she was distracted by the movie before I put a spoonful of applesauce into her mouth, I smiled in relief until her eyes got big and she spit the food out and looked at me with big tear filled eyes. "Rae baby Mommy is so confused, I know your hungry why won't you eat?"
