Chapter 15
Preparations
I decided not to do an interview with Rita Skeeter. After all, it very well could get me into even more trouble. After Morgan Brody asked me to the ball, I walked back to our common room. I felt like feathers were tickling my stomach.
When I arrived back at our common rooms, I found Ginny sitting beside Ron, appearing to comfort him. Harry and Hermione stood around them, talking. When I walked closer to hear what they were talking about, I learned Ron had tried asking out Fleur Delacour, our Beauxbatons champion, to the ball. I could only imagine how that went.
After Ron picked himself up a bit, he looked up at Hermione. "Hey, you're a girl."
"I'm glad you finally noticed," Hermione said, sounding annoyed.
"You should go me," Ron insisted, "and Harry can take Ginny."
"I'm already going with Neville," Ginny pointed out. "In fact, I need to go down to Hogsmeade and get a dress."
She said farewell and left. Ron still looked to Hermione, who shrugged and said, "Actually, I have a date too."
Ron gawked in utter disbelief. "Come on, Hermione, no you don't. Just pick one of us to go with, and..." his jaw dropped as he just noticed I had taken a seat on the couch across from him. "Melanie? Wow... you actually look like a girl now."
I let out a soft chuckle. "Thanks... Ron."
"Why don't you go out with Harry?" he asked me. "He has to have a date for the opening dance."
"Sorry, but I already have a date," I said with a shrug, and glanced up at Harry and added, "Besides, you really don't want to dance with me."
"Really?" Ron snorted at me. "You're going to play that game, too?"
"It's true," I insisted. "Morgan Brody asked me out this morning."
"What? You can't go with him," Ron said, bewildered. "He doesn't even go to this school."
I tilted my head. "I don't think there are any rules on that... and he will be apart of our school next year."
"Fine," he sighed, looking desperately to Hermione. "Who are you going with?"
"It's a surprise," she answered, stiffly, folding her arms. "I've actually had this arrangement quite some time, had you just bothered to ask..."
With that, she marched back up to the girls dormitories. Ron shot me an exasperated glance and demanded, "Do you know who she's supposedly going out with?"
I shrugged. "No idea. I didn't know until just now too, so... I actually do need to talk to Hermione so, I'll see you guys later."
"Melanie, wait," Harry called and I turned back. "Do you know anyone what might not have a date for the ball?"
I thought for a moment. I never really chatted with a lot of the girls here so I honestly had no idea who had dates and who did not.
One name came to mind. I laughed and jested, "I don't think Lenora has a date, considering she told me she was going with Brody and we know that's not true. You can try asking her... though I can't guarantee you'll survive the night..."
Ron laughed while Harry merely sighed.
xXx
Hermione was pleased to hear I decided against talking to Skeeter. I knew she was right. I did not have any real evidence against Lenora, instead, just acting out of anger. However, as time passed, people seemed to move on from the news of my true birth and talk about hotter topics, like the Yule Ball.
