Okay so I know this is short but I have found great difficulty in writing this chapter in particular. I have written and rewritten different scenarios in just a few paragraphs but I was never happy with how far away the story was from the way I feel the characters would really respond to a situation. I tried my best to find a middle ground between the way Jac would really react and how we all want her to react (e.g. "I love you Fletch let's run away together and live happily ever after") Here's what I got:
Jac looked straight at Fletch and he stared right back at her. She closed her eyes momentarily, preparing herself for the conversation that was to come.
"What are you doing here Fletch" She said quietly as she walked past him and to her desk.
"What... you weren't seriously expecting to leave things how we left them last night?"
"Well clearly you thought I was prepared to, or you wouldn't be standing in my office three hours before your shift." Jac held his gaze but lowered her tone "What do you want from me Fletch?"
"I want you to tell me why you're really leaving" he whispered
She clenched her jaw and leaned forward
"Then you're wasting your time"
Fletch was silent then. He knew Jac and he knew how stubborn she could be but he didn't know what else to say. Jac was trying to empty her desk as swiftly as possible and keep her thoughts away from the man in front of her. She stood up straight and walked away from the desk, her jaw still clenched, but Fletch stood in her way.
"Jac, you have left this place once, I can't let you do it again" He said firmly
"It's not your choice Fletcher" she replied, avoiding his gaze
He moved his hands to her waist and pulled her closer to him "Jac, please..."
A tear escaped her eye as she looked up at him, her hands against his chest and as she felt her whole world tearing apart, she couldn't help herself. Moving onto her tiptoes, she closed her eyes and leaned up so their lips were inches apart, she could feel the heat from his skin and smell his aftershave. The longing, needing her to be one with him was unbearable for Fletch and he moved slightly to nudge her affectionately with his nose in an attempt to initiate the inevitable. A tear rolled down her cheek as she gently leaned her head back to kiss him. It was slow and beautiful and he held her tight against his body by her waist like he would never let her go but all to soon she pulled away again and left her lingering sense on his lips like a ghost. She placed her heels back on the floor and let her forehead fall onto his chest, wiping her tears away with the back of her hand.
"I can't do this" She whispered
"Jac..."
"I'm sorry" She broke out of his arms and picked up the box from her desk. Reaching the doors she turned around to Fletch and looked him in the the eye. She breathed in and prepared herself for the three words he never thought he would hear her say:Haha you guys know how much I love a cliffhanger;) I know this, for now, isn't the ending a lot of you (and me honestly!) would have liked this chapter to have but all of the 'Happy ever after' scenarios I wrote were ok but they were so far fetched that the characters just weren't Jac and Fletch anymore and I still want to respect who they actually are (fictionally I know!) and how a scene like this would actually play out between the two of them.
That's my talk over though, and there is more coming so don't lose hope!!
