"Kathleen! You're here!" a familiar voice said.
"Mama Les!" I said in surprise. It was my ex's mother, Leslie. She is the nicest and the strongest woman that I know, who managed to take care of 3 kids on her own while starting a company.
"I didn't know you were coming! Paul didn't tell me that you were invited. I'm so happy that you're here! But also confused." She said as she engulfed me in a tight hug.
"Paul's marrying my best friend." I said chuckling awkwardly.
"Oh, dear." She said shaking her head. "I'm sorry for my son's stupidity."
I laughed at that, "It's fine! I moved on already." Well, maybe not yet but I'm in the process of it!
"I missed you a lot! You can still talk to me about anything, Kathleen. Just like old times" She said smiling.
I smiled at her, "Of course! Though it might be awkward to still call you Mama Les in front of Ella and Paul."
"Who cares?" She asked. I chuckled.
"I'm glad you're still the same." I said beaming at her. She was like a friend and a mother figure in one to me. I'm grateful that I met her. "How are things with your boyfriend?" I asked wiggling my eyebrows.
"Oh, Kathleen! He's the best!" She exclaimed. "I feel like I'm a teenager again! George has been nothing but amazing to me and to Chris and Paul. You must meet him!"
"I'm happy that you're happy." I said while giving her a smile. "Invite me to your wedding then!"
She laughed, "When he proposes then I will!" She looked into my eyes and said, "You're still the daughter that I dreamt of having."
I couldn't help but feel a lump in my throat and my vision starting to blur as tears threatened to fall, "You're still the mother-in-law that I dreamt of having."
We hugged each other, "Paul said that I should meet my in-laws." She said as I broke off of the hug.
I smiled at her, "You should!" I said as I try to give a smile while thinking about how fake Janice is going to be when she meets Leslie. I cringed at the thought of it.
"Something tells me it's not going to be pleasant." She said studying my expression.
"I think it's going to be fine." I said trying to assure her by fake smiling and laughing. "You know me, I unintentionally show animated expressions!"
"I know when you're lying, Kathleen." She said giving me a look. She sighed, "Well, there's no escaping now."
"I should leave you to it." I smiled and followed it with a chortle.
Leslie smiled as she said, "I'll see you later, Kathleen."
I walked to my room with a smile but suddenly felt like my stomach turned upside down. I could feel my hand shake as I slipped my keycard in and reached towards the doorknob, I held the cold metal tight and felt my palms begin to be sweaty- like the first time I held hands back in 7th grade. I let go of the knob and tried to collect my courage.
The door flew open- I almost had a heart attack.
"Are you coming in or not?" A rich low voice muttered in annoyance. I couldn't meet his eye! My roommate is a guy!
I walked inside the room with my head down and only looking at the brown carpet of room 614. Thankfully, there were two beds.
I looked at him and saw that he was sitting on the edge of the bed and typing on his phone. This is my chance to actually see what he looks like. He's really tall with wide shoulders and his hands are two times bigger than my face! Well, That might be too exaggerated but still! I could see that his ears are protruding and that his complexion is really pale under his black shirt.
"Are you going to continue to stare?" He asked.
"I'm sorry." I mumbled as I turned around in embarrassment. I took off my shoes and socks and lied down on the bed. I could feel my eyes droop and dozed off to sleep from the long flight.
