Out in the Cold

Finn's P.O.V

It's entirely white out, the mountain blizzard whipping past me with an ever-so constant barrage of snow and cold. Thanks to the heavy winter boots and snow clothes, along with the facial covering we all wear, Bubblegum made sure that none of us would freeze to death up here. And, thankfully, the right sleeve is thick enough to prevent my robotic arm from getting too cold and locking up. The last one the princess gave me broke after my eighteenth birthday, so I got fitted with a more metallic skeleton model. I think it goes nice with the ScanDeck we got equipped with before the trek up here, which is essentially this black and pink little arm and claw that extends from a box we strap to our backs and scans the terrain around us. And just for peace of mind, I make it give a quick little scan while I'm standing here. As I thought, no signs of hostile life and I'm right in the middle of the snow valley that I'm supposed to be in.

Judging by the tracker displayed on my wrist screen, I'm right on top of where I need to be. I'm out here to check on the environment scanner/collector that Peebs placed out here many, many years ago. It's one of a dozen that her, Marceline, and I have come to research. The two ladies are currently back at base while I'm out here and as I get on my knees and dig a bit in the snow, I hope to Golb that they're staying warmer than I am. I dig and dig and dig and finally touch some metal, a smile spreading across my face as I pull out the cylindrical contraption. I don't fully understand how it works, nor am I able to read the complex words written on the sides, but I was taught the important bits.

"Hey, Finn, just checking in" Bubblegum's slightly staticky voice comes from the earpiece in my right ear, "How's it going? Any luck?"

"Yep, I found it alright" I answer, speaking louder than normal since the blizzard is noisy enough on its own.

"Fantastic" She says, sounding pleased, "What does it read?"

"Well, from the looks of it, the temperature spikes are much higher than they should be. Though that's really no surprise since you expected as much from how much colder it's been back home" I answer, turning the device over in my hands, "Nearly negative forty where I'm at right now. And, by your estimations, it should only be negative twenty five. That's definitely not good."

And it's the entire reason we came out here anyway. Peebles noticed that it was getting unusually cold for the time of year we're in and around the same time, her sensors started acting up. So, she asked for my help in going on an expedition to Icefall Mountain, where she placed the sensors. I agreed, since I thought it would be a fun change of pace, and once Marceline entered in too, it was even better. Apparently, she had helped with their initial placement all those years ago and knew some things about them that Bubblegum had long forgotten by now, making it necessary for her to come. Marceline wasn't that thrilled by the prospect, but agreed only after hearing that I'd be joining her and Peebs. It was then a chilling and tiring trudge up the mountain, though I slipped and fell a few times when climbing, to reach the cave where PB had set up camp before. And, needless to say, none of us were in a good mood by the time we got there. But, somehow, we managed to put our heads together and get everything situated. I guess it just goes to show that teamwork really can get the job done.

"Ugh, darn. Yeah, that definitely could be better" Bubblegum sighs, not happy about the news, "Though I think a few more readings from the other sensors will help with the setting adjustments for my atmospheric climate changing machine."

"So, should I put this one back?" I ask for confirmation.

"Yes, please do bury it back in the snow for me" She agrees.

"Ugh...would you keep it down, Bonnibel?" I hear Marceline groan in the back, probably having been woken from her nap by our talking.

"Good morning, Marcy" I tease, cracking a smile as I set the cylinder back in the snow and begin covering it back up.
