6a.m. My alarm wakes me up. I roll out of bed, grumbling under my breath. Reaching into my drawers, i pull out a sports shirt and a pair of leggings. My favourite galaxy print ones. As i get dressed and put my hair up, I couldn't help the nerves setting into my stomache. Today is my first day at Karasuno High school. My Dad used to attend, and he was a member of their boys volleyball club. It's funny, sometimes. He never had a growth spurt until he hit college. I walk outside and put my headphones on, playing the soundtrack to the musical 'Hamilton.'
During Dad's time at Karasuno, they became a powerhouse and got to nationals. Because he was short, but brilliant, they soon started calling him, the 'Tiny Giant. ' He stopped playing when he got an injury in his senior year at college, a ripped tendon in his leg and a broken finger. He hasn't played competitively since. I mean, we have dabbled a bit over time. Mainly my tosses and receives, as a way for him to get over the divorce when i was just starting middle school.
About a year later we moved here to Karasuno from our family home in Hatsetsu. The Katsuki's are Dad's cousins. Uncle Yuri is a figure skater, his parents run a hot spring inn.
Back to the main story.
I finish my run and cool down in the yard. Dad says I've always been a runner. I did try out for the track team in middle school, but they kicked me out for causing trouble. I ended up in the theatre group, and it worked pretty well. I ignored them and they ignored me. Perfect.
I walk in just as Dad finishes setting the table. "Morning, Dad!" He looks up and smiles. "Morning, Princess! What did you see today?" We live in a strange neighborhood. Sometimes I'll see an owl running. Trust me, it's freaky. They look like they have stubs, but when they run with their wings out, you see supermodel legs. One time i saw a black cat riding a golden retriever. What? I kid you not, this is normal for our area. Today though, nothing. I just hand him a fig from the tree next door that happens to grow over the street. He chuckled. "Always looking for loopholes."
I smiled. We sat down to a breakfast of wholegrain pancakes and power smoothies. Then i take a shower, spraying the strong jets on my calves in case i didn't cool down properly. It has happened, and i couldn't walk right for a few days. I pulled on the girls uniform and instantly felt uncomfortable. The skirt is way too short. I checked the dress code. Nothing to say we can't wear shorts. I pulled on some black shorts underneath the skirt and brushed my hair down with a ribbon.
I smiled at my deceptively feminine appearance. At 14, I am as close to masculine as a cis girl of slender build could get. I could still kick your ass if i were in a ballgown and high heels. Maybe. Dad beeps the horn of the car, and i grab my bag. Running out, i check to make sure i have everything. Lunch. Check. Books. Check. Stationary. Check. Miscellaneous items? Check. Where the hell is my sport gear. I quickly grab the white shirt and gym shorts off the chair and gym shoes from the hallway. I cram everything in, and jump into the car.
No going back now.
Karasuno, here I come!**********
We pull into the parking lot. Now I can say I am more excited than nervous. I say goodbye to Dad, and climb out. I drink in the scenery. First time i was here, it was orientation. Now i can see how it really looks. Huge fields, multiple buildings, and how many gyms? So many sakura trees. My favourite. I'm not watching where I'm going, and crash into someone. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" She frantically apologizes. "It's not your fault. I wasn't watching where i was going." She's about an inch taller than me, cute blonde bob and clearly nervous about everything. I help her gather her things and hold out my hand. "My name is Tanaka Aki. Nice to meet you." She returns the handshake. "Hitoka Yachi." Such a pretty name. "Are you a first year?" I ask. She nods. "Same," I reply. "Maybe we can help each other out? I mean i went to the orientation, but i couldn't attention. Some shorty kept distracting me.'' She nods again. Bows. And walks away stiffly. Yep, nervous. I shrug. Oh well, can't be friends with everyone.
I look down at the map and try to locate the auditorium for the welcome ceremony. I find it on the map, and realize I am right in front of it. I walk in with an air, and find a seat. I'm about to sit down when a guy with black hair and a stony face came up behind me. It's Kageyama Tobio, King of the Court. "I was gonna sit there," he says darkly. "And I'm not stopping you," i retort as i take the next seat. He sits down with a thud, and slouches during most of the speech. He really is a jerk.
