Today's the day. The first day of the Inter-high preliminaries. I wonder who we play tomorrow? That...might be thinking a little too far ahead for now. I put my skates away after morning club. It's a weekday, but Sensei managed to get permission for us to leave for the games. After changing into my volleyball gear, I start making my way to the gym.

"Aki! Wait!" I turn around to see Kenjiro running towards me. "Good luck with your game today," he says, smiling. I make a mental note to keep him far away from Shoyo as possible. Their smiles and sunshine energy combined would be just a little too bright.
"Thanks," I reply. I'm not really focusing, I'm stressed about getting to the bus on time. Whatever it is, he's better hurry up with it.

"I made this for you," he holds out a red ticket with the Chinese characters for 'good luck.' I smiled.
"Kenjiro, you really didn't have to do this."

"No, but I wanted to. You've been cheering me on for years and I just wanted to do the same. I also got front row seats to your games today." I am speechless.

A rush of wind blows passed me, followed by a familiar voice shouting, "Kageyamaaaaaaaa!"
"Thanks again," I say, hurriedly putting the ticket in my bag. "But I really have to go now. I'll see you there!" I wave goodbye as I chase after the freak duo.

I reach the gym before they do, and when they finally arrive, I'm still fresh. These idiots don't run, do they? I know Shoyo rides his bike over a mountain pass to and from school every day, but that's different to distance running.

"Took you guys about long enough, didn't it?" I taunt. Shoyo collapses and Tobio leans against a post.

"I...I win," he gasps. "That makes 31 wins, 30 losses and 1 tie for me." A few seconds of silence as they catch their breath before...
"No."
"WHAT?!" The king turns around. "Yes it does! I'm in the lead now, fair and square!" Shoyo stares up at me while I put my hair in a bun. I get what he's trying to say.

"Actually, Tobio. Shoyo's right. If you're keeping a total score, you've lost 30 times, and won 32." His face says he doesn't understand. "Your middle school game, baka! Your team won. Totally thrashed Shoyo's team." Shoyo stands up and repeats his little speech from last year that I just happened to overhear.

"'If you really are the King who rules the court, then someday I'll just have to beat you! And I'm gonna be the one who gets to stand on the court longer than anyone else!' And don't you forget it! In the end, the one who's finally gonna beat you is me. Even if it takes 10 years, or 20. I'm gonna do it!!" He stops to catch his breath. That was honestly quite a speech. I head into the bathrooms to finish getting ready.

I'm a girl playing on a boys team. I already have a voice lower than the average girl, it's why I was put with the altos in middle school theatre club. Also, people always tell me how much I look like Uncle Yuri. So, to be taken seriously, I have to put on a binder and a wig. I managed to get the binder a few weeks ago. I was just messing around, accidentally pressed 'buy now.' But Hey, it fits. The wig is short, messy black hair. Once I'm done, I take a look in the mirror.
