So, I've tested three types of pen ink for different things.

Those pen inks would be: gel, ballpoint, and liquid ink (India ink).

For clean linework, such as writing or zentangling, gel pen seems to be the best, because the smooth, "gelly" texture allows the pen to just glide across the paper without any skipping or breaks in the line.

However, for detailed, realistic drawings with shading, ballpoint pen is the best. Because of its skipping, it lets the user control how much ink is placed in one spot, by adjusting the angle and pressure slightly, to simulate light and shadow.

And as for India ink, it performs well in both categories, since it all depends on the brush or tip that is being used with it. For instance, a wide brush pen is excellent for shading, and a fine point is good for writing. Overall, I personally do not use India ink as much (maybe only at the beginning of a pen drawing for some linework for the rest of it), but it still is very useful for calligraphy, and is the best in that category.

Have fun with this information.
