Spencer tiptoed into the kitchen, hoping that her mother would not hear her footsteps from her bedroom. However as she got there,  her mother was already preparing for dinner. Veronica, who turned around just in time to see Spencer sneak into the kitchen asked inquisitively, "Why sneak around in your own house?" And added with a more firmer tone, "you are not a teenager anymore."

"Mom, I- I was ju----," Spencer stammered but was cut off almost immediately.

"Who else was here?"

"T-tobyyy?" Spencer muttered in a small voice, avoiding eye contact. To her surprise, her mother's frown had disappeared into an amusing smile.

"Oh, I didn't think that... actually, never mind, tell him that he is welcome in the house anytime," Veronica patted her shoulder gently. Spencer couldn't help blushing and smiled gratefully.

The skinny brunette quickly scurried outside onto the porch. Her long and slightly wavy hair flutter in the evening breeze, beating on her shoulder. She wished whatever happened in the kitchen was just a bad dream. How could her mom tell that she still has feelings for him from a simple conversation? Growing up in this family, she had inherited many personality traits from her parents, inquisitiveness, the urge to win, many more. "Like mother like daughter," she muttered, "no wonder they say that families are part of you, no matter how far apart". She sighed.  Her friends, except Hanna still has no idea that she likes Toby more than a friend. 'Well, I was just hanging out with him, nothing happened and we are not even official. So there is nothing to worry about Spencer!' She thought to herself, trying to stay calm. Alas, she gave up and buried her face in her hands. Why does she have to live life the hard way?
