Another hour passed uneventfully with Britt and Calum going to their interrogation. I talked to Emery the whole time, but it was starting to feel like chit-chat, like we were avoiding the question that laid heavily on both of us. In the middle of one of her timid stories about getting her undergrad, I focused in on the pendant I had noticed her wearing at the beginning of the day. After she had finished, I asked about it.
"Your necklace," I say and she looks down at her chest. "Is that the one I gave you?"
Emery's cheeks turned bright red as she picked the ruby pendant off her chest.
"It is," I say with a smile. I remember picking it out for her at the jewelry store downtown. My mom thought I should have gotten something simpler, but I thought it suited her perfectly. "Why do you still wear it?"
Emery turned the ruby over in her fingers. "I always wear it."
"Really?" It's hard to imagine her putting on the necklace every morning after everything that happened.
She dropped the pendant back against her chest and looked back at me. "Yeah," she said quietly. This time I look away, anger at myself building up inside of me. I should've found her sooner. I should've tried harder to get back to her instead of keeping my distance.
The door opens again, and Calum and Britt return. Once the officers are gone again, Luke stands up and walks over to us. "You two have your story right?"
"Yes," Emery says because I don't.
"I think they believe us," Luke looks at the door like they might walk in.
"Luke, honey?" a sour voice singsongs. I turn to see Ivy lying on her back on the bench. "If you're tying up loose ends, you forgot one."
Luke turns away and rolls his eyes. "Ivy?"
"Yes babe?"
"Don't screw this up."
She puts a hand to her chest like she's hurt. "I would never!"
Luke turns around and addresses everyone. It reminds me of that night, we he turned to us and told us not to tell a soul. "We're almost out of this, so let's try not to get thrown back in here, okay?"
"And you all wanted to escape," Calum scoffs.
"Do we not care who told in the first place?" Michael chimes.
"The person who told isn't going to fess up," Ivy sat up, looking at Michael with her mascara smeared eyes.
"How do we know it's not you?" Michael shot back, just as tired of Ivy as the rest of us were.
"Why would I have told when I knew one of you little "do-gooders" would tell for me?" Ivy asks in a normal tone for the first time all day. The cell goes quiet, eyes darting at each other. Emery takes my hand suddenly, and I glance over at her.
"So I guess the real question, doll," Ivy addresses Luke again. "Is who wanted to have a an early class reunion?"
The door opens, startling all of us. "Aston Irwin, Emery Baker, and Ivy Cobb."
Ivy smiles at us wickedly. "Well come on, lovebirds."
