~Emery~
Luke stands up and motions us to his table when we enter the café. I had pulled myself together, at least on the outside. Before we came to the café, we had stopped by Ashton's apartment so he could get fresh clothes while I sat in the car, gripping the steering wheel so I wouldn’t cry. I even screamed out loud at one point in frustration, startling a jogger. But now I was fine. I had to be fine.
"You two took your time getting here," Luke speaks, scooting his chair in. "Hope you like water."
I take a sip, and swallowing felt like there was a rock in my throat. I ignored it.
"We thought Britt would be with you," Ashton says carefully, opening the menu. Luke's faces falls for a moment, but he regains himself.
"It's not happening. We're too different now. But I am glad to see you two made up so quickly," Luke gulps down some water, and I know exactly how he feels. I lean my elbows on the table.
"Has anything weird happened to you since yesterday, Luke?" I ask quietly, glancing at the tables beside us. There was a man sitting by himself, in all black clothes, talking into a flip phone.
"No, why?"
I look at Ashton sheepishly. I still don’t like to think that the disc is at my house, let alone talk about it. Ashton leans forward and whispers to Luke what happened last this morning. His eyes grow wide, and he looks at me.
"What kind of dick does that?!" he exclaims, drawing the attention of a couple of families in the café, but not the man in black at the table next to us, which I find strange.
I leaned forward again, lowering my voice. "Yesterday when we got out of the police station Ivy told me what she thought had happened-"
"Whoa, and you trust Ivy's opinion?" Luke starts to laugh. Ashton gives him a look. I continue, trying to keep myself neatly wrapped, but I could feel the knot on the bow slipping.
"She said that she thought maybe one of us told someone, and that that someone may have something against us, a vendetta or something."
Luke doesn't make fun of me this time, in fact he looks like he's believing me. "I never told anyone," he shakes his head at both of us. "Unless you count my dog, or my sister's teddy bear."
I breathe out in relief.
"Are you sure it wasn't Ivy herself? She might be sending you on a wild goose chase," Luke takes a sip of his water. I shake my head.
"No. I know this sounds weird, but she looked like she was telling the truth," I look at Ashton. I knew he was having a hard time trusting Ivy, I knew he was having a hard time believing me at all. "That's why I need to get in touch with her," I look back at Luke. "She might know something."
Luke frowns. "I wish I could help, Emery, but you'd have better luck finding a needle in a haystack."
I groan, and look at Ashton. He scoots his chair back and stands up. "If anything weird happens, let us know," he says to Luke, doing one of those weird hand shake things all boys know how to do. I walk over and hug Luke, only to see that man in black eyeing me. I'm disgusted, but I don’t want to arouse anything. I say bye to Luke and follow Ashton to the front counter, where we have to pay for our food. The man is still staring at me.
"Ash," I whisper, grabbing his arm. Ashton stops trying to pull his wallet out and looks down at me. "Do you see that guy at the table next to Luke?"
Ashton nods, and I watch his jaw clench. "He's staring at you."
"Don't," I hold his arm tighter as he starts to step forward. "Don't go over there. I swear I've seen him somewhere before."
Ashton looks down at me, I can tell he doesn't want to seem over protective. "I don’t like the looks of him."
"The let's pay and leave," I hold his eyes. He glances over at the man again but I catch his eyes again. "Okay?"
Ashton takes a breath. "Okay."
We pay for our food. We leave. I don't see the man in back again.
Not for the rest of that day.
