2 a.m.

2 a.m. is brutally honest.
it's when the truth creeps out
from under the bed and
looks you straight in the eye.
it hits you hard
like a punch in the face
and catches you off guard.
like the moment
where you glance at the clock
and wonder how its gotten to be
so late already
when you could have sworn
it was only 10 p.m.
last time you checked.

it finds you when
you're least prepared
and knocks the air
out of your chest
leaving you gasping for air
and helpless in defense
against the chaos of your thoughts.

and when reality descends
into your mind
and you suddenly realize
how lonely you are at 2 a.m.
all you have is yourself
when that isn't enough.

and while your eyes shed
waves of unrelenting tears
your heart bleeds and throbs
for someone who isn't there,
someone who can't respond,
or someone who doesn't
love you back.
