hewwo uwu
im just gonna
yeah this isn't abuse
NOW LET ME EXPLAIN
culture. is a huge thing with anime. fans outside of Japan often won't get the cultural context of some things in anime and so it leads to things like the infamous jelly filled donut scene in the Pokemon dub.
in heroaca's case, we have Mitsuki. good ol' Mitsuki. a nice character. to some people.
as shown in that gif up there Mitsuki has a tendency to slap/hit Katsuki. of course people got furious at that and immediately put her on the same level as Endeavor, calling her an awful abuser who doesn't deserve love.
,,i might be exaggerating a bit but whatever you get what i mean--anyway yeah this hasn't been going well in the community.
in the foreign community at least.
like i said, cultural context is a HUGE part of understanding certain parts of anime. whether it be a joke, a holiday, a mythological creature, whatever. and that applies to this scene too. in the American fandom's eyes: yes, this is abuse. but, in the Japanese fandom's eyes, this is simple discipline.
with the things i've gathered from people born and raised in Japan/Asian families, something like what Mistuki is doing is nothing compared to what actual abuse is defined as there. beatings like this are viewed as nothing but reminding the child that they have to follow rules and listen to their parents. this would NOT be defined as abuse in Japan. you can TELL this fine because even Toshinori and Aizawa, Katsuki's teachers (who care deeply about his health and safety), don't do anything about it, when in America something like this would be reported immediately. however, as i said, fans outside of Japan wouldn't get this because of the difference in culture. cultural context is really important.
my opinion on the matter is: the Bakugou's don't live in America. they live in Japan, with a completely different culture and filled with people who behave completely differently than we do here. so, knowing the context of this scene, this is fine to me. i understand that what Mitsuki is doing is simple discipline and that there's nothing wrong with it. if they were in America, i'd of course think differently of it and would consider her an abuser. but that's not the case.
but!!!! don't misunderstand, i'm NOT saying that abuse is ok simply because i understand the context of this scene!! abuse is fucking disgusting!! i am ALSO not saying that Endeavor is not an abuser!! Endeavor is an abuser in EVERY sense of the word, in both American and Japanese culture!! so pls!! dont yell at me!!
