Onyx and Citrine (Steven Universe au)

Born a misfit

Citrine's POV       

              I opened my eyes, balled up in a small crevasse. I started to feel claustrophobic, so I shifted myself over and found an opening. Putting a hand out, I managed to crawl out and saw a bright sky...then I fell.

             I was so worried about getting out of that stone prison that I didn't care to look down and see the drop. My body hit the rocky ground hard, I thought I had cracked something. Shakily, I stood up an examined myself. I had sunset-yellow colored skin with dark orange hair tied back in a ponytail. I had a blue sleeveless shirt and matching blue pants. Looking down I saw an opening on my lower right flank for my gem. I was a Citrine.

           "Hey! She's out!" A feminine voice called as a purple gem came over. "Come on Citrine 5061, let's wait for the...what the?"

           "What's wrong?" I asked, peeved about being called a "she". The purple gem had large white hair and a stone on her chin. I guessed she was an Amethyst.

             "Why do you look like that?" She asked. "You look like what those weak humans call a male."

             I felt embarrassment color my face, well, making it a darker yellow. "Um, that's because I am male. Is that bad?"

             She looked like I slapped her in the face. "Uh oh. Th-that's not possible. There has never been a male gem in the history of homeworld!"

"But, what's wrong with being male?" I asked, panic rising in my voice.

Before she could answer another amethyst came over and said, "Hey! The Onyx is about to come out!"

"Got it!" Amethyst #1 called over. She turned her attention back to me and said, "Okay, we'll talk about it later. But for the time being, let's just wait for the Onyx. Okay?"

"O-okay," I said shakily, trembling slightly. What's wrong with me being male? Is it against the rules? I wondered as we made our way to where the rest of the amethysts were gathered. Wanting to get there faster, I started to sprint. In two seconds I made it over, the amethyst I had talked to panting. "H-how. *pant* How did you, *pant* run so fast?"

"Huh? That was fast? Felt normal to me," I admitted with a shrug. She looked at me in awe, but before she could speak another amethyst shouted, "Look!"

One of the top holes started to glow, and poof! A light grey gem burst out in a somersault and landed on its feet in a crouch position, slowly rising up. The new gem had short black hair with spiky bangs and sharp, intimidating black eyes. It had a blue uniform just like everyone else, but something told me that it didn't like wearing it. I didn't care for it either. The gem was located on top of its left hand. Oh, and did I mention that it was also a male! Apparently I wasn't the only one!

Unlike me though, he didn't seem too friendly. He looked like he was sizing everyone up.

His first words were, "Where is the gem in charge?"

An amethyst with her gem on her stomach said, "Huh? Oh! You mean Holly Blue Agate! She should be com-"

"Good. I rather not waste my time figuring out who she is," He cut her off with his cold voice. I looked at him in shock, who did this gem think he was? He wasn't in charge, he was just like everyone else. He caught my gaze, examining my expression.

             "You're a Citrine, correct?" He asked, walking over to me. The amethysts got out of his way, letting him stand in front of me.

              "Yeah..." I said cautiously, taking a step back. His eyes kind of scared me. They didn't show any warmth. Just a piercing glare.

"Interesting," He said, then he walked off and climbed back into the hole he came out of. "Tell me when Holly Blue Agate arrives."

We all stared puzzled at him, then the amethysts started whispering among themselves.

"Is she a he?!"
"That's not possible! This must be a joke!"
"He's kind of scary, isn't he? He talks as if he knows what we're capable of."
"Did you see that new Citrine? Is she a male too?"

As they all pondered, (leaving me out of course), a loud, feminine voice shouted, "ATTENTION!"

Oh boy, what now! I thought as I watched all the chatter die down, the amethysts standing straight and in line, their hands forming a diamond shape.
