Onyx and Citrine (Steven Universe au)

Awe and fear

Citrine's POV

As she bragged about him, Onyx's eyes widened, then relaxed, ending their cold glare. His body became more rigid like a statue.

"Amethyst! Climb that wall!" Holly Blue Agate shouted as she pointed to the rock wall I had emerged from. Hesitating at first, she ran up to the wall and began to climb, slowly so she wouldn't fall. Agate looked at Onyx and said, "What I want you to do is destroy the Amethyst's physical form."

                 With a quiet, "Understood," he sprinted towards the poor, unknowing Amethyst. She was three quarters up when he summoned his weapon, a long, black katana. Gripping the sharp sword tightly with his teeth, he easily scaled the wall and managed to catch up to her. One glance at the blade and her face blanched. He took hold of the sword with a free hand, then struck, right across her back! She lost her grip an fell with him following after her.

Her body...well, how do I say this? Kind of...poofed in a cloud of white smoke, her gem left vulnerable. Onyx land with a barrel roll and caught her gem. Without a moment to catch his breath, he ran back and gave the gem to Holly Blue, who seemed thrilled.

                   "Excellent! Completely marvelous!" She gushed as he looked at her, awaiting new orders. She patted him on the head and turned to the collection of gems, "These two will be trained daily, the Citrine sharing quarters with you all and the Onyx by himself. I hear that the Diamonds are excited to meet them so if you crack them I shall shatter you myself!"

Everyone flinched when they heard her threat to shatter them. I tried to give them an apologetic look, but they were to scared to notice. The Onyx didn't react at all, standing poised and ready to attack. Holy Blue looked at me and said, "Don't worry dear, just tell me if they hurt you and I will take care of them."

"Y-yes ma'am," I stuttered as she sent the Amethysts, Jaspers, and a bunch of other gems to their quarters. I began to follow Holly as she led us to the rooms, but she stopped for a moment and laughed softly.

"I almost forgot!"'she exclaimed as she clapped and said, "That will be all!"

Immediately Onyx relaxed his body and took a shuddering breath. He looked around and quickly composed himself, then brought his gaze to me.

"Uh, hi?" I said as we continued to walk.

"What happened and where are we going?" He muttered in a monotone voice so Holly wouldn't notice.

"You...don't remember?" I asked, cocking my head a little. How could he not know? I thought. Wait, she said it gives him one mission, maybe it suppressed his thoughts.

"I asked you a question," he said back, still remaining quiet.

"Well, you sorta poofed an Amethyst and now we're going to a place to live. I'm staying with the others, but apparently you're going to have your own room," I summed up. He just took it all in and remained silent. When we made it to a small corridor, Holly opened a door. Inside were all of the gems I had seen earlier, including the Amethysts with gems on their shoulder and chests.

"Off you go Citrine! I hear that our lustrous Blue Diamond will be coming in two days to see you, along with Onyx," She said as she softly nudged me into the room. All of the gems stared at me like I was an anomaly. As I was about to ask Holly a question she closed the door and left me to my fellow gems.

               "Umm, hi?" I mumbled as I shuffled my feet.  All the stares felt like weights being added onto my shoulders.

              A Jasper with a gem for her left eye stepped out of the crowd. "Hi, you're not gonna attack us like the Onyx did, right?" She questioned.

              "Of course not! Why would I do that?" I asked as a collective sigh left the mix of Jaspers and Amythests. To be honest, the question hurt a little. There was no way I would ever act like that Onyx, so cold and menacing. "How do you know about what happened? I don't remember seeing a Jasper while we were introduced. Well, if that's what you would call it."

            She simply shrugged, "Eh, word gets around. I'm Jasper 4028, what's your name?" She asked as she put out her hand.

            I shook it and smiled at the kind gesture, "I'm Citrine 5061, but please, call me Citrine."

All the tension in the room died down and everyone started chatting with me, some catching me up on the latest gossip in Homeworld and others inquiring about my appearance. Despite the stress when Holly Blue Agate introduced me and Onyx, I found myself laughing along with my fellow gems. Soon they all forgot about my looks and were just interested in, well, me.

Speaking of Onyx, I can't help but wonder what he's doing I thought to myself as I sat down and listened to a Carnelian's story.
