To be fair, I was fully aware what a host club was long before I walked in. I used to read mangà, along with a lot my old friends back at home. I was even in my old schools Anime club.
There were separate groups of girls, some sitting on couches and others standing and talking, but all of the groups had one guy standing in the center. By the time I had entered, the twin had joined his other half in the center of one of the groups. I stood there like an idiot for a moment as the door shut behind me.
Haruhi was the first to notice, and he smiled as he excused himself from the surrounding girls. Much to my dismay, they all looked at me like I was some sort of threat. Much to their dismay, however, he didn't seem to care about their opinions and walked over to me.
"I'm glad you actually decided to come," he said with a light-hearted smile, "I can introduce you to everyone, if you like."
Before I even had time to respond, he took me around to each of the boys come a one by one, introduced me. Honestly, it was kind of embarrassing. At one point, one of the girl that he was speaking to before decided to come up and ask if he was coming back.
"Actually, since this is Valerie's first day, I've decided to spend this time helping her get acquainted with our school. But don't worry, next time, I'm all yours." after he spoke, the girl blushed and nodded before returning to the group.
"You really don't have to do that, you know." I said, turning back to him and smiling slightly, appreciative of the offer.
"I know, but it's a good excuse to get away," he said with a lighthearted laugh, "Don't you think?"
We walked over to vacant couch and sat down, and even though he seemed oblivious to the pointed stairs of his fan club, I was not. I felt uncomfortable, mostly because their stares seemed almost like silent warnings and threats, as if to tell me not to get too close.
"So you're American, why did you move to Japan?" It was obvious that he was just curious and asking for the sake of conversation, but I couldn't help my expression turning cold.
"My uncle moved here a few years ago for work. My sister and I live with him," I responded curtly, my days wandering away from him.
"That's nice, how are you enjoying it so far?" Haruhi's response was on time and relaxed, still friendly, as if he didn't notice my change in attitude at all. I was relieved.
"To be honest, I haven't really seen much besides the airport, the house, and the school," I responded, starting to relax again as we continued to talk. " but the airport was alright, the house is nice, and the school seems... Well, expensive."
He laughed at that, "Expensive is right, although most people say distinguished. It's a private school, so either your test scores were amazing or your uncle is someone the school considers important."
"Important?" I looked at him again and asked, a little confused about what he meant by that.
"Well, like a high-ranking politician, or the CEO of a big company. Maybe even someone exceptionally wealthy who donates to the school," he responded, motioning around the room. "Most of the students here would fall under that category."
I nodded to signify my understanding, following with my gaze before returning it back to him. "And yourself? What category would you fall under?"
"My test scores were good," Haruhi said nonchalantly, even though I wasn't buying it. If someone in your family had to be important like that, then in order for someone to get in the school based solely on something like test results, then they must've been amazing, if not perfect. I decided not to push though, I didn't want to be rude.
"I see, well, my uncle is not part of the government or anything, but I guess you could call him wealthy," I said, not wanting to sound like I was some spoiled brat or something. "He does make a lot of money, but I'm not really used to living the way he does. Back home, we were a pretty average family. We went to a normal public school, we only had one car, and we definitely weren't part of high society."
Before he had time to answer, the twins had walked over and were now standing in front of us, forcing me to realize that most of the girls had left. What few stragglers that were still here we're making their way out as we spoke and the rest of the host club was cleaning up.
"Did you guys have-" said one twin, "A nice chat?" finish the other, both of them standing the exact same way as they spoke to us. It was almost impossible to tell him apart, and now that I thought about it, I wasn't entirely sure which one had been there to pick me up from class.
"Absolutely, and thank you for meeting her after class for me, Hikaru," It was as if Haruhi had read my mind, but I was grateful when Hikaru responded, making it obvious which of the two he was.
"Sure, whatever. But next time, you can do your own errands." even though the response seemed harsh, it didn't seem to affect Haruhi in the slightest.
"Alright then, but I figured it was a good chance for you to get to know her a little," he said with a smile, winking at his friend. "I figured it would be nice for her to realize early on that you two aren't actually one person. No matter how much you guys tried to act that way."
"Aww, no fair. You were making sure we couldn't mess with her in advance!" Said the other twin, obviously feigning disappointment. It was kind of funny to watch how different their reactions were when they realized their cover was blown.
"Who cares?" said Hikaru, sounding slightly aggravated. He then immediately turned around and walked away, leaving his brother behind.
"Don't mind him, I'm Kaoru, nice to meet you," he said politely and holding hands and out for me to shake. I accepted the offer with a smile.
"I'm Valarie. The pleasure is all mine," I responded, then motioned in the direction of the other twin, "I don't know what I did to get on his bad side."
"Probably nothing. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you, he'll come around eventually."
We all talked for a moment or so before it was mutually decided that we were all going to head home for the day. They both told me that I can come back any time I liked, and Haruhi gave me his cell phone number to save in my phone. Afterwards, I called my uncle and he came to pick me up.
By the time I had finished all my homework and was laying in bed, I realized that I had been smiling ever since I had left the host club.
