Chapter 19

"When my mother told me, she wanted me to speak, I was nervous as all hell. But then I remembered, this is for Dad. And he gave me one of the greatest gifts anyone could give another person: his faith. He believed in Kara and me more than he believed in God at times. So, for him, I'll do anything. He was my first love," I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat.

I looked into the crowd that surrounded my father's sunken casket in the open hole. The white casket that Mom picked out for daddy was covered in dozens of red roses. The longer I looked at the casket the more I thought of how hard it was to continue my speech.

"You've got it, baby." My mom encouraged from her front row seat, a black veil covered her face and sorrows.

I gave her the best smile I could muster up as I continued. "Joe 'Joey' Samuels..."

It's been a month since my father's funeral. Every day gets a little easier than the last. Catching up in my classes have kept me busy along with managing the ice cream shop. Dad left the Ice Cream shop in my name, but I won't gain full control of the parlor until I graduate Undergrad.

Thank you, Daddy.

It has also been a month since I've seen Vince. I try not to think about it too much, if I did I would lose focus, and let my emotions consume me. I couldn't do that, I was on the verge of scoring an internship at Helping Hands, the best physical therapy practice in Jersey.

Kara is doing a lot better, what Kara didn't tell me was that she terminated her pregnancy. She wasn't ready to be a mother, especially because of a one-night stand. Jack forgave her, and they're working toward a healthier relationship.

Mom, well mom is coping the best way she can. She spends a lot of time at the ice cream parlor. Kara thinks because that's her way of staying connected to Dad. Everyone grieves differently I suppose.

All in all, life is quiet.

"Come on Lyn, you haven't been out since you came back from the Bahamas. You deserve a break!" Begged my friend Syd. Kara, Mom, and I decided to stick with the story that I went on vacation for a month and a half to the Bahamas.

I balanced my cell phone between my ear and shoulder as I highlighted a line in my organic chemistry textbook. I just want to study and stuff my face with pretzels.

"Please! I won't bother you for the rest of the semester about going out!"

"Promise?" I was interested. Syd asked me every weekend to go out and it was beginning to aggravate me. I've grown accustomed to my schedule; going out and partying just didn't fit into my schedule.

"Yes, but you do realize this is insane that I'm promising not to invite you out. Something a normal friend does?"

"Yeah, yeah, I'll be ready in an hour. Love ya, bye!" I hung up quickly and got off my bed. It's been so long since I dressed sexily.

I scanned my closet, not impressed. This is another reason why I haven't gone to any parties or clubs. I grabbed my trusty red dress with cutouts on the sides and my black heels. I quickly walked to Kara's room.

Not bothering to knock I opened the door and showed her the outfit. She looked up from her MacBook. Her light eyes scanning me from head to toe.

"You can do better. Next!" She shook her head.
