"Is that really all you got?"

A young man stood there, eyebrows raised, as if he was challenging the young woman in front of him. The silence that had previously filled the room was cut off by the sharp slices of blades as the woman suddenly charged forward. Seeing her coming his way, the man dodged the attack and used his wooden staff to kick her legs out from under her. But instead of her body colliding with the floor, she planted her hands on the grey tile below her and kicked her legs backwards over her head so she was standing upright again.

The two stepped at each other again, both aiming to get the other on the ground. The woman swiped both of the blades at the man, but he leaned back out of the way of her quick movements. When she went to bring her knife to the mans face, he caught her wrist and pushed her backwards, making her lose her balance. She landed on her back and the man was quick to pin her hands to her sides. There was a smug look on his face and he went to say something to her, but he was cut off by the woman bringing her knee up into his stomach. His grip loosened enough so that she was able to wriggle out from underneath him and switch their positions.

Now the woman had the man pinned to the floor, laying flat on his stomach as she twisted his arm behind his back. He let out a grunt of protest as she pulled his arm back further, not enough to break it, but just enough to make in painful. With a smirk plastered on her face, she bent her head down to his level.

"Is that really all you got?" She taunts as the man moves in an attempt to escape her grasp. Unable to remove himself from her hold, the man lets out a strangled sigh.

"Alright, alright. You've made your point, Kay." The man muttered out as his face continued to be squished against the hard floor. Rolling her eyes, she let go of him and stood up, allowing the man to breathe out a sigh of relief. He proceeded to push himself off the ground, rolling out his shoulder and muttering profanities under his breath as he did so. Turning toward her, their brown eyes lock as she gives him a smirk, knowing that she had finally won. She walked forward and patted the man on the back.

"It's alright Lucas, everyone has off days. Just don't challenge me again." She warned while trying to suppress a smile. With that, the Maverick boy scoffed.

"Don't get too comfortable, Mikayla. Those wins of yours are far and few between."

This was only the third time Mikayla had managed to best her twin brother in one of their sparring sessions. While she was well versed in the use of weapons and firearms, his hand-to-hand combat skills were much more advanced than her own. They didn't call him 'Mr. Perfect' for nothing. Mikayla was actually the one who started the nickname, but she wasn't sure exactly when it caught on. All she knew was that they called Lucas this because he was just about the perfect example of what an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D should be. Between his incredible computer smarts, field experience, and amazing combat skills, Mikayla was proud of him. He was getting some of the recognition that she knew he deserved.

The only reason that Mikayla had managed to take down her brother today was because his mind was racing with possible theories and ideas. Word about a foreign object falling from the sky in the middle of nowhere was traveling through the base rather quickly. The idea of otherworldly beings and objects actually existing intrigued Lucas, made him feel as though he and Mikayla weren't so alone. The brunette always found a fascination in unusual happenings and events, but that could stem from the fact that both he and his sister were one of those unusual happenings.

They both knew that they were different, that they weren't like the other agents here. They grew up without a family, they went missing as kids, and came back grown up. Even after they joined S.H.I.E.L.D, nothing got any better. If anything, things only went downhill from there. When they first joined the organization, it was routine that they get their DNA and background thoroughly checked. Their results left experts baffled. Their DNA differed from standard human DNA and it showed evidence of being tampered. Despite genetic information about an agent being classified, word of the Maverick twins' enhanced capabilities spread somehow. Now not only were they the 'amnesia-ridden' teenagers that Director Nick Fury picked up off the side of road, but now they were labeled as dangerous and unstable by their fellow agents.

No one came too close to them, and training rooms were evacuated the moment either of them crossed the threshold. There were only a handful of people at S.H.I.E.L.D that the twins felt comfortable around and trusted: Nick Fury, the man that took them in and acted as a father figure; Maria Hill, who showed them everything they needed to know about S.H.I.E.L.D; Phil Coulson, who was simply kind and welcomed them with no hesitation; and finally, Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff, who acted as the twins mentors and friends.

A loud ring sliced through the silence the room had fallen into, causing the Maverick's to jump. Seeing her phone rattle on the steel table in the corner of the room, Mikayla rushed to answer the incoming call. She picked up the phone reading the caller ID and letting out a heavy sigh. "Pull yourself together Lucas, I think we have another mission."

Hearing her brother groan dramatically across the room, Mikayla laughed as she picked up the call. "Hey Nick, do we have another mission already? We literally just came back from the Abu Dhabi assignment yesterday," the girl complained.

"Then I hope you're well rested because you and Lucas will be headed to New Mexico with Agent Coulson. You have five minutes to get to my office for further information," the Director boomed over the phone. "Oh and Maverick," he continued.

"Yes, Nick?" The Maverick girl replied. Looking over to Lucas, she saw him muttering things under his breath and tossing one of her daggers around. She rolled her eyes at him, hearing every cuss and threat he was saying to himself.

"I don't want to hear any of your brother's bitching about this assignment. So tell him to get it all out before he sets foot in my office." Then he ended the call.

Ah, Nicholas Fury, always so straightforward with everything.

Being used to the abrupt ending of their conversations, Mikayla simply put her phone into her jacket pocket and made her way across the room to her twin.

As Lucas tossed the dagger into the air for the tenth time, he lifted his hand to catch it again. But before the sharpened piece of vibranium could fall back into his hand, Mikayla snatched it out of the air. She twirled the dagger in her hand and pulled the other from his grasp, grinning at the expression on his face in that moment. Sliding the daggers into the holsters on the sides of her thighs she walked towards the door and said, "Let's go Lucas. We have a new assignment with Phil in New Mexico, and Fury wants us in his office right now to talk about said assignment. Oh and he says to leave your all of your bitching behind." Then she was through the door and out of the room.

Lucas sprung to life again with a huff, grabbing his staff off of the floor and leaning it up against the wall as he jogged out of the room to catch up to his sister.

"H-hey, I'm sorry I enjoy sleeping every once and a while," he shouted down the corridor at Mikayla's retreating figure. "It's not like I could with your loud ass snoring next door. Aw, come on Kay, wait up!"

Authors Note:
Wow this was gross and the fight scene at the beginning was wicked bad. I'm just really bad at writing fight scenes and I apologize. And once again, any feedback or comments on anything would be greatly appreciated!!
