James hadn't thought that would have worked. She'd become so soft. She'd been ready to put him out and changed her mind as soon as he'd challenged her.
He got up to get his bags. Her back hurt, so did her neck. She needed a new mattress. She rolled unto her stomach.
She could hear him shuffling around. She didn't want him messing with her mother's things so she got up.
"What are you doing?" James turned towards her. He'd been bent over his suitcase.
Jan felt like this was deja Vu. It seemed this man lived to embarrass her. She tried not to blush as images of past caresses and kisses passed through her mind.
"Nothing."
She peered at him sceptically. "Come." She motioned. "Lemme show you where you're sleeping tonight. "
"I thought I was sleeping with you."
Jan broke into a fit of humourless giggles. She scoffed. "You thought wrong."
He followed her into the corridor until they got to a door opposite the bathroom. She opened the door.
He was unimpressed. The room was dusty. There was a queen sized bed surrounded by storage bins.
"You're joking right."
"I look like I joking?"
She maneuvered some of the bins out of the room and into the empty space at the end of the corridor.
He offered to help her but she declined.
She covered the bed, shook the dust from the curtains and swept it out of the room.
An hour later, the room looked more welcoming than it had when he'd first seen it.
He thanked her and she grunted in response. It was a cool night. She took a bath and washed her hair. She was careful to remove the knots that had formed from days of neglect. She shaved her underarms and took time to exfoliate.
She felt a little better. Her hair looked more luxurious than it had in months. She'd begun to get over her mother's death but it still hurt sometimes.
And yet she couldn't bring herself to leave the house for too long. She'd quit her job though Derek had told her she could come back anytime.
After an hour long bath, she changed into a t-shirt and cotton shorts. She moisturized her hair, applying her oils and conditioner carefully then she wrapped her hair and got into bed. She wasn't sleepy. She'd slept enough for one day and she didn't think she could sleep with this man just a few doors down.James sat up in the bed he'd been given. It was a little hard for his taste. He was hot. He opened a window, feeling the breeze of the cool night.
He stripped out of his clothes. At least he could sleep naked.
He threw the pillows off the bed and lay down. Sleep came swiftly this time.
