Juvan is bringing me to visit his grandma today. After spending a long time floating and cleaning ourselves in the moonpool while enjoying our mer-life I finally got home.
Juvan was waiting for me outside, I quickly slipped into decent clothes and got out dodging my mother's questions.
Juvan smiled and we walked side by side talking about everything his grandma told him when he was small.
The island was named after a Chinese Princess Tang-Koo Li. Apparently, the princess and her mother were flying somewhere passing by the island and the plane exploded. Somehow the princess survived and stayed in the island until 1946 some plane passing by saw smoke coming from the island and rescued the princess.
It was like the female version of Tarzan except it was real life not some story from a book.
We greeted by a lovely old woman with a warm smile as we rang the doorbell. She quickly pulled Juvan into a bone-crushing hug.
"It's been months," his grandma said dramatically wiping away her tears. I can hear the thick Spanish accent.
"I was busy with college," he said slowly pushing her away.
Juvan's grandma looked at me and I smiled "Who is this lovely young man," she asked.
"this is my friend Jamie" Juvan introduced patting my shoulder.
"Hi Mrs. Ramirez," I said offering my hand.
"Oh call me grandma!" she said and pulled me into a hug.
"I forgot to invite you in. Oh! how rude of me" she pushed us into her house and closed the door.
She told us to sit on the sofa and disappeared to make us tea. Juvan insisted but she is stubborn just like him. She served us the tea and sat in front of us with a glass of water. I looked at the water weirdly and Juvan mumbled 'diabetes'.
I quickly take a sip on my sweet tea
"hmm grandma what do you know about Tang-ko island" Juvan I quickly shot him look that sounded 'why don't you just tell her that we're a group of mer freaks'.
"Tang-Ko... it was named after a beautiful Chinese princess..." she started but Juvan cuts her off "I already told him that story"
"Then what do you want? " she asked harshly.
"I'm talking about the underwater caves and pools" Juvan blurted I shot him a glare and kicked his leg under the table.
"Pool? underwater you've been into that pool?" she asked in shock raising her voice.
"you know the pool?" I butted in raising my eyebrows in shock. She knows something I can see it clearly in her face.
"That pool.... " she trailed raising her glass and closed her eyes probably trying to remember that place.
Something we didn't expect happened she quickly pushed the tea table pinning us to the sofa.
"Grandma what are you doing!" Juvan yelled trying to push the table.
She splashed the water and waited for something, I know what she's waiting for.
Suddenly I was shirtless and my leg disappeared. she quickly stood up "I figured," she said with a smirk.
"H-hh-how!?" Juvan stuttered, shocked at his grandma's action. He quickly pushed the table using his tail the teacup fell crashing on the floor.
"Oh, I know how it feels being a teenager with a tail. The ocean breeze, the fishes, the pool and the moon calling to me but forced to live on the land. Oh, I remember everything clearly" she said examining our tails in amazement.
"you are a mermaid?!" Juvan exclaimed.
"I was." she corrected.
"what? this is not permanent?" I asked.
"It is but I lost it and that's a story for another day" she answered. "now dry yourself and go home" she ordered.
"but we need to know about.." he trailed.
"Oh sweetie I think you've known enough," she said pinching his cheek.
After drying ourself using hair dryer the tail vanished and we explained everything that happened. She just listened.
"Tell your secret only to the one you truly trust. Enjoy every moment of it while it lasts and kids be careful there some bad people out there" she warned.
I know something bad happened to her, that must be how she lost her tail but before we ask her about 'the bad people' she slammed the door in our face.
We walked to the cafe as we received a text from Katy informing that they are waiting for us there. The cafe is only over a kilometer far from Mrs. Ramirez's house.
On the way to the cafe Juvan and I had a little fight but suddenly Juvan hugged me, nearly cutting my oxygen supply and we made up. We agreed to never fight again now we're back to making sexual jokes and slapping each other for fun.
"Finally! what happened? tell us everything" Katy said probably thought we had good news for them.
"thanks to Juvan she knows our secret," I said slapping Juvan softly he responded by kicking my leg.
"What!" Everyone said at the same time.
"Calm down she used to be like us but she lost it"I explained pointing at our legs.
"how is that possible" Marie said.
"what secret and who lost what?" a boy from the next table butted in. I know that boy! he's in my science class.
"Eva!" I exclaimed grabbing her hand "Eva lost our secret science project tools" I added. She looked at me confused and then nodded.
"what tool? what secret project?" he asked again eyeing us strangely. I don't like him, he's nosy.
"never mind, you guys are so weird," he said getting up from his table. We're weird? Hahaha weird is and understatement.
"Says the guy who sits in the back of the class and avoiding every one every day." I snapped not liking his attitude. He left the cafe after paying with a scowl.
"Well that was a good one," Katy said.
"I don't like him" I stated "well anyways we're losing one our cult member tomorrow" I joked looking at Juvan.
"Arghhhh It's not like I'm dying, I'm just going away to college for a while but 'll meet you guys every day in the moonpool" he informed.
"anyway I'm going to Zayn's tonight, he's been begging me for days" Katy opened her mouth to say something but I was quick to shut it with "we don't want him to get suspicious and start to spy on us don't we?" I asked and everyone groaned.
Even we promised to meet again, I said my goodbyes to Juvan and left the cafe thinking about ways to trick Zayn.
