Anne and I planned to meet out at the popular cafe a few blocks away from Avonlea High, and I was just hoping that'd I be there first so I could pick Anne and me a nice cup of hot cocoa. I tugged on my scarf, straightening it out as I approach the cafe, a little nervous. I reached out to open the door of the cafe, and it appears that Anne also had done the same thing. I look up to her, and she looked at me as well. "Anne...you're here.." I look back at my hand on the door handle and looked back at her quickly continuing what I was saying, "..on time!" She gave me a slight smile, "Yes, and it appears that, you are too...Gil." I opened the door and let her in first. I followed in shortly after her. We went up to see what they had even though I already had wanted hot cocoa, I still let Anne decide although, respecting her needs. She looked at the menu quietly, and I slightly looked at her while doing so, and decided to speak up, "So, what will you have Anne?" Anne looked slightly over to me, "Well, what are you having Blythe?" I smiled, and replied back, "Hot cocoa." The cashier asked us if we were ready, we simultaneously said, "Yes." We looked at each other. The cashier then asked who'll order or if we were ordering separately. I quickly said no, looked over to Anne, "What were you going to have again?" She looked at me, "The same thing.." I smirked, "Two hot cocoas, and I'll be paying for both of us. I assume we want in the 16 oz?" I looked over to Anne to confirm that question, she nodded enthusiastically. We decided to go and sit down to wait for our beverages. I took my coat off and out it on the back of the chair I sat in. Anne let hers sit behind her while she was sitting in her chair. We looked at each other, expecting one of us to start up a conversation. It was a little awkward, so I decided to break the silence, "Are you excited for mini golf?" Anne then snapped into her competitive mode, "Yes! Of course, I can't to beat you. I already feel it." I smirked, "You never know, I may beat you.." Anne interrupted me, "Absolutely not! I will beat you fair and square Blythe." I wiggled my finger, "Noo I believe--" "No don't contradict me Gil." Our hot cocoa came when she said this. I held my hands up slightly, "I give up." I chuckled, "Say I've heard a lot about you Anne." Anne got a bit quiet. She had her face resting on her left hand, looking at me silently, I could see the light shine in her eyes, "I'm glad you're getting along with everyone." I gave her a kind smile. She then says, "Well, I've heard some things about you too, Gill." I got curious, what have people said about me? "Like what Anne??" Anne thought really hard while sipping her hot cocoa. "Oh yes, I've heard about your father..how's he doing?" Anne looked very curious, I gulped down my hot cocoa, I started to think about how to say that my dad passed away. I took a deep breath in, "My dad, he passed away before you came actually. So I'm in the hands of Bash. He's a great dude. He actually is the reason why we're goin' mini golfing." I smiled quietly as I finished my hot cocoa surprisingly quick. Anne set her drink down, realizing that she said the wrong thing. I quickly comforted her, "Don't feel sorry, you didn't know. Anyways are you done with your cocoa." Anne nodded. We both got up and put our coats on as we started to leave. I opened the door for Anne, and we headed to the mini golf place.
The mini golf place was all in black light, and I think Anne was really fascinated by it. "I guess they don't give much out in the orphanages? Or adoption homes? What do they call them now these days?" I look over to Anne as she made eye contact with me. She shook her head a bit, "Well, they're both the same thing, but I was an orphan, and was adopted by Matthew and Marilla. So yeah. Anyways let's play?" I quietly agreed as I gave the coupon to the people at the front, and payed for our game of mini golf. We were given two different golf balls that shone differently under the blacklight. We headed to the first hole. I let Anne go first. Anne looked at me funny, and held her golf putt stiffly. She kept missing the golf ball. I watched her do this for a few minutes until she started to get annoyed. "Aughh!! Why do I keep missing the golf ball?? Blythe!! What did you do??" She looked at me, and it looked like she had a fire going on in her eyes, as she fumed with anger. I held out and put my hand up to defend myself, "I didn't do anything at all..." I looked at her, "Say have you played mini golf before?" She got quiet and crossed her arms, looked at something in the distance around the golf place. I sighed. I approached her. "Ok, well I'll show you." I moved Anne into the correct position, "One, you don't whack at the ground to hit the golf ball." I looked at how she held her golf putt. "Here, let me show you the proper way to hold your putt." I put my hands over Anne's, re-adjusting them to grip the putt, meanwhile Anne was completely silent, letting me do to help her hit the golf ball. I didn't realize how close I was to Anne. I felt the warmth of her body, and her hands were so soft that I almost couldn't stop touching them. I stepped back, "There, now in a swinging motion, hit the golf ball." Anne looked at me and back down at the golf ball. She did as I told her. The golf ball went all the way to the opposite end of the course. She got excited, and went down there to hit it into the hole. It went like this for a few games.
At the final hole, Anne said that based off the score card, we were tied. In this moment, I wondered what happened if I won, but I thought that it'd be better to let Anne win. I could care less. After all, I did like her. I like her when she's happy than sad. I like her more than a nice warm cup of tea or anything. I like her so much that I can't stop smiling, and she's looking at me funny right now that I needed to get back to what was actually happening. "What's with that smile? Gilbert! Are you planning something incriminating that I won't be able to win? Not that I want to win..but I need to win." Anne stood tall, acting proud. I laughed, "No, of course not. This is only a game of mini golf after all." I went first this time. My golf ball hit the curb and missed the final hole by a few inches as the ground around it was very steep. "Oh! So close," I looked over to Anne. "But I guess I might make it in the second time?" Anne was quiet as she didn't want to say anything but she did tell me to hurry up so she could go. I went over to my golf ball and intentionally hit it with a bit too power. I grimaced, and looked over at Anne to see her reaction. She silently smirked, and looked away really quick to avoid making eye contact with me. I muttered under my breath. "You're so cute, I'd kiss you if I could." Anne looked over to me, "Did you say something, Blythe?" I quickly responded with no. I finally hit the golf ball into the final hole. And as Anne finally got her ball into the final hole. She quickly added up the final score. I looked at her being so focused with adding the score on the score card. She did this twice to make sure. She got the biggest smile on her face. I curiously wondered why, "So..? Who won?" She looked at me intensely. "I did, you can look if you want." I looked at the score card she had in her hand to let me see it, "No, I trust that you did everything right. Congratulations Anne! You won your very first game of mini golf." I gave her a kind smile, she quickly said back, "Who said this was my first game, Blythe?" She looked away with a small smile on her face. I shook my head and chuckled. We headed back to the front to return our items. As we left the place, Anne accidentally tripped over her shoes. I quickly helped Anne back up, but she struggled a lot as she tried to get up herself. Even thought some people kept walking past us, it was oddly an awkward scene. As Anne finally got on both feet, and was stable again. We didn't realize how close we were together. Our faces were a few inches away from each other. I felt my face start to get warm as we made eye contact with each other. I couldn't help bear the thought of kissing her. I looked at her kindly, and slowly tried to get a bit close but then Anne pushed me away. I didn't know how to react, so I take a few steps back, stuttering a few words out, "Are you ok..? You're not hurt or anything?.." She looked at me silently, and it almost looked like she was blushing. She slowly answered back, "Yeah, I'm fine thanks. I-I-I should start to head back." She smiled at me, "Thanks, for inviting me. I'm glad to have the honor to beat you at golf." I looked at her quietly, giving her a small smile, "Yeah, thanks for coming Anne. I'll see you at school then." We waved bye to each other and went our separate ways. I think I had the same smile on my face as I walked back home, and I was trying very hard to not think of the I almost had kissed Anne moment. I felt flustered as I sink my face into my scarf.
