CHAPTER 2

Perfection

My mom looked like a damsel in distress with concern plastered on her tanned face as she eyed the unfamiliar roads around us.

“Do you know where were even going?” I asked concerned as I watched her. God forbid she got us lost in the middle of know where.

The second we got off of the ferry my mom began to drive towards town, but somehow we seemed to be in the middle of know where on random streets.

“We are on the right road. Didn’t I tell you already that this town is in the middle of know where.” my mom joked. I faked a laugh, but she obviously bought it since she didn’t make a comment.

I wasn’t trying to be rude, but the truth was I was still hurting over this entire situation. My mothers decisions are making the biggest impacts on my life currently.

I kept quiet as my mother kept driving into town, the consistent passing of tree after tree after tree was making me feel as if we were never moving.

It wasn’t until we came upon two large open gates that were rusting and had odd figurines carved on the top that I realized we were nearing civilization. The gates were open on either side of the road and were oddly rusting all over, but the tops knobs were carved into what seemed to be wolfs howling at the sky and an owl watching intently at the road.

I shivered slightly as I eyed the gate. This didn’t seem right at all.

We drove through the gates and slowly the trees began to thin out as a few houses were visible, old but liveable looking and I felt a little more comfortable.

I stayed quiet, and leaned my head against the window as I watched the same trees pass by.

Slowly more and more living space came into view until finally we came upon the small town of Hingston.

There was a large sign that read, “Welcome to Hingston!” as we entered in and immediately on both sides of the two way streets there were old antique stores, coffee shops, a shopping centre, a few outlet stores and random boutiques.

As my mom drove further in we passed the large parking lot that led into Hingston high which was barely visible since it was covered from the tall pine trees surrounding the entire area.

“Look, your school!” my mother exclaimed with a wide smile as she slowed slightly. I eyed it gloomily.

“Mhm…it looks…welcoming.” I murmured as I eyed the barely visible building. Truthfully it looked from here like a detention centre for children murderers.

My mother gave me a look of concern from my sarcastic remark but kept driving as we left the main part of town and headed off into the more dimly sectioned areas where houses were spread out from each other and properties were enlarged.

We both kept silent as my mother made various turns down different streets. We passed an old run down looking church that was decaying and falling apart, as well as a cemetery that took of a huge lot of space and was full of pine trees and slowly we began to fall back into the forest of pure pines again.
