Phil Lester, one of the forgotten children at the high school simply because he didn't do anything that was deemed 'cool' or 'interesting'. If you weren't good at playing football or excellent at playing video games you were neither of those things. But Phil preferred it that way, it meant that if he were to do anything wrong no one would have to know about it or even notice it. Whereas if you were one of the well know or 'popular' people everyone would be in and know your business. Phil could've moved school and if there was no fuss made over it no one would notice that the black haired boy was gone, but that was the reality of high school.Being the person he was meant that Phil found it quite easy to make friends, or as easy as it could be. He didn't try to pretend to be someone he wasn't just so that he could fit in with a certain group of people, instead he let the group of people find him and that's how his friend group came together. It wasn't a very big group compared to some of them that inhabited the school grounds, just under 20 or so but that meant that everyone was close to him. All except the two he had become to nervous to talk confidently around. One, a girl, Rachel, that he had know since he was young and for as long as he could remember they had been together. And the other, a boy, Dan, he hadn't known him for very long but he had quickly fallen in love with those deep brown eyes and the cheeky grin that showed ever so often.
Phil new that liking a boy was seen as 'wrong' by many of the people in this school and he desperately didn't want to become well known just because he had feelings for a boy. So, to repress those feelings he has tried so hard to force himself to love the girl that he had grown up with to make things seem normal to all those who dared to ask him the question of 'who do you like?'. He knew for certain that either of the two didn't look at him in the same way he looked at them because that was the way they looked at each other, or the way she looked at him.
Rachel always had that slight spark in her eye when she looked at Dan, her brown eyes always lit up when she seen him walk into a room almost as though he was the sun and her eyes the solar panels. But Dan's eyes seemed to never want to meet hers for too long and after a few seconds he would always look away, leaving her still staring at him like an idiot. And although she never did admit it to anyone it was very clear that she loved Dan, maybe even as much as Phil did. But it was always Phil that looked like the idiot, always staring at Dan as he ate or even when he was talking to someone else and often he was caught, or his eyes were caught by Dan's.
Phil had grown up with Rachel, they had walked to school daily, had dinner together, had sleepovers together and made many unforgettable memories together. Their parents were good friends too, their mums worked together and their dads often went out to football games together. Phil knew that if he was to get over Dan he was going to have to get Rachel to pay more attention to him somehow so that he could attempt to focus his heart on liking her as a distraction from Dan.
Taking his chance as they walked home from school that day together Phil slowed down his walking pace a little, turning his head to look at Rachel.
"R....Rachel?"
"Yes?"
She said before pausing her music and taking her earphones out. They done that a lot, just walking together not needing to actually talk because they knew each other well enough to get how the other was feeling without asking how their day had been.
"I was wondering if maybe this weekend or something if me and you...."
He paused choosing his next words carefully not wanting her to get the wrong idea, or rather his idea.
"And .... yeah and the others maybe wanted to go out for lunch or something?"
"Phil that sounds great, although I think I'm going out for dinner with Dan this weekend so I'll check with him"
Phil's heart sank, he was already to late to try save himself from the feelings he had brown haired boy. Yet it wasn't jealousy, it was regret that he hadn't acted soon enough as now both of those he loved were gone.
"O...ok whatever suits you best I guess"
And with that they went their separate ways, one listening intently to music and in their own world and the other who's life began to crumble in front of them.
