Phil walked to school alone again that morning as the rain battered down on him with no mercy. He had practically forgotten about the letter maybe because it wasn't his to worry about anymore or maybe because there were bigger things to worry about.

Rachel wasn't a the front gates this morning but she also wasn't in the school which made Phil wonder if her Mum had spoken to her. But then Phil noticed something that made his heart race, Dan. And no this time it wasn't the sight of the boy, no, it was the bag on his back, the old worn bag that Phil wished he hadn't noticed. His mind started racing as he tried to remember which bag he had put the letter in wondering what Dan must've thought of him.

At lunch Dan sat next to him again and Phil couldn't help but wonder if this would become a regular occurrence or if it was just a one time thing, either way he wouldn't mind. Rachel was still no where to be seen and the worry started to get to him, had she been kept of school by her Mum?, had she ran off with the girls to smoke?.

Dan had been trying the whole day to get Phil to notice him or to talk to him but every time he went to say something his insides seemed to scream at him to stop so sitting next to him at lunch was the only option he could manage at that moment in time. He just had to hope that Phil was walking home alone today so that he could approach and talk to him without feeling pressured or as though he was being watched, it would also make the hours he spent alone more bearable for him.

After lunch was again French and Phil just couldn't concentrate, but there was a perfectly reasonable explanation for that, Dan. Phil could feel the boy's eyes burning into him but he didn't dare look back at him because he knew he wouldn't be able to look away. Just the thought of looking into those brown eyes for as long as he wanted was enough to keep him happy.

As the end of the day got closer Dan began to get impatient or nervous, Phil couldn't tell, hitting his pencil against the table and tapping his foot which was quite obviously irritating the teacher.

As the flock of children slowly made their way out of the gates and went off on their own separate routes home Dan made sure to keep Phil in sight and ahead of him. Overthinking it would lead to him ending up going home without saying anything and being full of regret so he decided to just go for it.

"I ...... I got your letter"

Phil turned around so fast that Dan must've given him a fright but both the boys turned an equal shade of red with embarrassment.

"Sorry I didn't mean to scare you"

Phil laughed slightly, not being able to stop himself from looking into the boy's brown eyes that had so much more depth and beauty to them
than Rachel's.

"No it's ok I've just become used to walking alone"

Dan realised Phil had avoided the subject of the letter all together so decided to keep it that way not wanting to make him uncomfortable.

"I'm usually alone too"

Phil wasn't panicking because even just a small interaction like this made him believe that Dan deserved the letter a whole lot more than the girl did.

"W...would you like to come around to mine someday after school for pizza or something?"

Dan was becoming more comfortable around the boy and wasn't hesitating as much when he spoke anymore.

"That'd be great, we also live rather close to each other so I could come over anytime you wanted"

"Anytime?"

"Yeah. I could even climb through a window at midnight if you needed me that badly"

Dan laughed, he had never heard anyone who was so invested in coming to see him before.

They spoke about their day and Phil even brought up the problems he had with Rachel as he felt Dan was trustworthy.

Dan didn't once mention the letter as he didn't want to make Phil uncomfortable this early on, he'd ask about it later. After they said goodbye it only took Phil a few more minutes to get home and faster they usual. Taking his shoes off carefully and walking into the room smiling brightly.

"Someone's happy. I'm guessing today was better then sweetie?"

Phil's Mum always knew how he was feeling even if it wasn't obvious but today it was.

"Yes it was great"

Or rather the walk home was great, but she didn't know that.

"I'm going to a friend's for dinner is that ok?"

"That's perfect just be back before ten ok?"

"Back for ten got it!"

And with that he ran upstairs to get changed out of his school uniform still smiling more than he had in a long time.
