Today had come far faster than I had hoped for. Years ago when I had been placed in Chicago, I never would have imagined I'd remain to see a daughter of my own experience Choosing Day.
Now, her hair fell in heaps on the floor, a golden blanket coating the edges of the chair legs and scattered in front of me. She didn't think I'd be looking and occasionally tried to steal individual glances in the mirror. Not out of vanity, more to relinquish curiosity. Though in our teachings curiosity was a sin, a means for selfishness to appeal to self wonderment and interest in the world around. To achieve answers that we did not need to know. She was so much like me at her age. Our minds practically still the same even now.
I had been thinking about the choices my children would make continuously throughout the days. Whenever there were spare moments after service hours, I would try to engage my husband in conversation about Caleb and Beatrice's choices as inconspicuous as possible, moreover presenting a concerned parental front. That part wasn't all lie, as I am always concerned for their well-being. Though I was wondering if there were any signs that my children would disband on from this faction. Both seemed to have adapted alright through the years. My dearest Caleb was a role model citizen to our community and I had no doubt he would remain with us. Beatrice tended to confuse me. Her heart was in the right place though she did not know how to carry out common day to day acts of selfishness. It just did not seem to be in her nature. This harbour did not appear that it would hold her here for much longer which worried me. What if she followed the same trail of factions I left behind? After all, was Abnegation truly, deep down my faction of choice? Of course I knew I could do good, find out information from Chicagos most politically aligned faction and be safe here. But was this the extent of my happiness. Beatrice's? There had to be more for her. There was more, I had experienced the thrills and fears firsthand. Though I hoped she knew what she was in for.
