Mackenzie

I parked the truck on the side of the gravel road in pretty much in the middle of nowhere. My truck door creaks open as I hop out to lie on the hood. The stars above as bright as the moon. Dan was angry with me, but he was also hurt. Something inside me thought he’d be so angry, he’d never talk to me again.

I jumped at the sound of my phone buzzing in my pocket. The vibrated sound irrated me to answer. I didn’t bother looking at the caller I.D before answering the annoying buzz.

“Hello.”

Silence.

“Hello?”

More silence.

“Okay, whoever this is –“

“I need your help.” The husky voice on the other end was obvious. I sat up, rubbing my tired eyes.

“Why? Aren’t you mad at me?” My voice became strained.

“Mack. Please.” The hearing of “please” from Dan made me feel something weird and I always fell for it.

“Okay, Fine.” I said, jumping off the hood to get behind the wheel.

The engine roared into life as I turned the wheel around to head back into town. I put the call on loudspeaker and placed it on the glove box.

“What’s going on, may I ask?” My curiosity washed over me, thinking the worst.

He stuttered before he began. “Tom’s back in town.”  He admitted.

My stomach dropped. My eyes widened, and my throat became numb. Making speaking impossible.

“Where are you? I’m on my way.” Dan didn’t need to be alone when it came to this. I knew he was both vengeful and scared.

“Getting mum. Meet me at the house.” He directed. I turned the car for a short cut.

“And Mackenzie?” He asked. I forgot I didn’t end the call.

“Yes?”

“I don’t think I can do this face to face. But I’m sorry. So sorry. I was an idiot and I need my Mack. I need you here with me for this.”

“That’s why I’m on my way. You can always rely on me, even in a pickle like this.”

“I-I” He stuttered. Damn, he was nervous.

“Hey, don’t worry. I’m on my way and we can figure this out when I’m there.” I said in my most calming and soft voice imaginable. I ended the call before he said anything else and I applied more pressure on the gas petal. I needed to get there quicker than the speeding limits let me.

 Dan

I was going to tell her over the phone, but being her, she didn’t think of the worst. If I tried to call her back… we’d all be dead.

I could even hear the sound of the metal moving against mums head. Toms low chuckle was forming deep down in the soul he never had. Mums tears fell down her cheeks as he dug the gun deeper into her skull.

“So Dan, when’s your girlfriend coming around?” No way on this earth was he getting even close to Mack. My expression must show my emotions, because Toms laugh returned.

“You must really like her.”

“I love her.” I blurted out. Toms and mums eyes widened in surprise. The thing is I’m not. I loved her all this time and never realized it.

“You do? Oh, isn’t that sweet Kelly? Our son is in love.”

Mum tried to wriggle in his grasp, but he held on tight. No way was this son of a bitch going to win again.

The door creaked open behind all three of us and we turned to see Mackenzies bouncing hair race through the doorway. She stopped in her tracks when she saw Tom inside. Shit!

“Hello Mackenzie, haven’t you grown up to be a beautiful young lady.” Tom described, but she kept her head high.

“You don’t have the nerve to talk to me like that. Let go of Kelly. Now.” Her demanding voice was cute, but not what I should’ve been thinking about.

He let go of mum with a shrug. Mum was in my arms before I knew it, hugging tightly. Her sobbing in my arms I hugged her, putting one hand on her back and the other on her head.

“Oh please, Kelly. Stop being so dramatic.” Tom whined. His annoyed expression made my anger raise enough to do what I’ve wanted to do since I was a little. I threw a punch, not thinking about the consequences of a man with a gun.

The punch made Tom stumble back and the gasps of both the girls I loved. Mackenzie’s training and diets have built my arms into a something incredible. My knuckles throbbed, but damn did it feel good.

The death glare in his eyes would be frightening to any other normal person. But to me? I’ve seen it so many times. Especially those few moments before he killed my little brother.

His stalk towards me had my stance opening, prepared to fight. The thing about what Mack taught me was that was professional fighting, this is street. There is no ref to see me tap out.

The moment his fist connected with my jaw, I didn’t realize how fast things were getting. My head span and my feet stumbled back before the clog in my throat came back. But it wasn’t because for my loss of words. No, it was because he was chocking me. Hard fingers wrapped around my neck, making breathing obviously impossible.

I tried to wrap my fingers around his neck, but my fingers became tired as well as my eyes became heavy. That’s when I fell to the ground, breathing becoming a chore.
