Hello and welcome to an interview with the lovely AureilliaSkyland . What may I call you?
Aaliyah.
Nice to meet you, Aaliyah. Is that your real name or your pen name?
Real name. My pen name is Leah.
Neat. What made you choose to use your real name instead of a pen name?
Autocorrect usually doesn't have problems with Leah, like it does when you try to type Aaliyah. Plus, I use my real name because I'm used to using it in private messages.
Haha that'll do it for you for sure. What got you into writing about superheroes?
I've always enjoyed writing, and I've been a fan of Marvel and DC for a while now. One day it randomly occurred to me that I should try writing my own superhero book.
That's really cool. I'm a fan of both DC and Marvel as well. Though I'm lead to believe most people do not like both, rather one or the other.
I don't regret attempting to write a superhero book. The genre is fun to write, and I wish I would've tried it sooner.
Well, it's never too late to try anything! Let's talk about your story Breaking Butterfly. What started the journey of writing that book specifically?
I was sorting through old stories that I had never finished, when I found a two paragraph start to a book that I absolutely loved. I liked it so much, that I wanted to use it to write a book. I had been meaning to write a superhero book for a while, so I figured why not? I wanted to challenge myself, so I took an old original character that I had come up with when I was little, and decided to recreate the character and finally give her a story of her own.
Ahhh... the good old ideas you find when you're younger. Haha. Such a rare thing those are! Glad you found it and decided to write a book about her! How far into the story are you with writing, and how do you think the readers like it?
I currently have 3 chapters left to write before finishing the book. As for my readers I'm certain they enjoy the book. I often get comments requesting that I publish the next chapter. Also, I enjoy reading the comments people leave about what they think will happen next, or who they think the villain secretly is.
That's amazing! Such feedback really gives you motivation to get the next chapter out, doesn't it? You must feel very accomplished for being so close to being done with the story! Can you tell me a bit about the story? Maybe a short synopsis?
It's about a girl named Aurelia who has been involved in the superhero community at a young age. Since she has the power telekinesis, being a hero has never been too difficult. However, when a new Supervillain organization appears and starts killing off people without powers, being the hero proves to be a lot harder than she originally thought it was.
Are you happy with the story so far? Any changes you'd want to make, or things you want to add?
I'm proud of how the story has turned out. I honestly had no plot in mind when I started writing the book. However, the book has inspired along the way, and I'm planning on writing a sequel. I've even been leaving little Easter eggs in the last few chapters that hint at what is to come in book two. As for changes, I plan on rereading the book to check spelling and grammar.
Awesome! Editing is definitely a good idea, and I love putting Easter eggs in my story as well! What sub-genre or other genre would you classify your story in, and do you have a favorite genre?
My book is in the adventure genre, but I've also got it tagged as Science fiction. Personally my favorite genre is science fiction. Science is my favorite school subject. When reading science fiction novels, I enjoy how the genre uses scientific logic to explain the fictitious. It makes the book feel as though it could actually happen. I also like how science fiction tends to have more intelligent protagonists. I've always thought smarter characters are more relatable, atleast to me.
Yes! Definitely. ^.^ I to, love science, though unfortunately I'm not very good at it. Speaking of your mention of science making things more realistic, have you heard of the genre "Magical Realism"? It's similar to the whole aspect where science helps explain things, but rather than physical, it's metaphysical.
I haven't heard of magical realism, but it definitely sounds like a genre I'd write about.
Magical Realism is one of my favorite genres. Do you read Stephen King? He mainly writes in that genre. Speaking of magic, and metaphysical things, who's your favorite superhero and/or villain?
I haven't read Stephen King yet. My favorite DC hero is the Flash, and my favorite Marvel hero is Doctor Strange.
Hell yeah! Doctor Strange! Honestly, I'll forever see Benedict as Sherlock, but that's just me. He does a perfect job of playing Strange in my opinion. Why do you like the character so much?
I like how witty and sarcastic Dr. Strange is. I also like that he's a doctor. I actually plan on going into the medical field, so I find his career relatable.
Haha, yes! Sarcasm is the best. That's an interesting reason for liking a character, well, in my opinion. Though I'm sure the Mystic Arts will, unfortunately, be left out of your career plan.
Yeah, and I could never be a surgeon, my hands are too shaky.
Hmmm... seems you have somewhat of a similar situation as Doctor Strange in regards to the hands, at least, before he got his powers. Anything else you'd like to talk about or is this it?
I think that's about it. Hope you have fun with the rest of your interviews.
You have an awesome rest of your day.
