"I'm so happy" Cheryl smiled as she scrolled through her instagram comments. "i'm so proud of you Cher" whispered her girlfriend kissing the top of her head as she pulled her close. "i just wanted the world to know your mine"

Toni loved when they spent time alone together, she loved cuddling in their bed or just sitting on the couch with a glass of wine, discussing mindless topics. Cheryl would often talk about her late brother, the glimpses of happiness in her tragic upbringing, how they would play hide and seek in the depths of Thornhill, or the time Nana Rose dressed them up in each others clothes. "he would of liked you" she would say stroking her auburn curls, Toni wished she could recite such happy memories from her childhood. The serpent never talked about her past, and after the crash she swore she would never speak about it again, so it caught her off guard when Cheryl threw her phone onto the other side of their bed and turned around to face her. "you have never talked about you childhood T" she questioned, sporting her cute little confused face. Toni's heart skipped a beat, she subconsciously tightened her grip around her girlfriend "it's ok you don't ha..." Cheryl reassured, a worried look plastered on her face.

"no, no, its ok. i want to"

flashback - 10 years ago

"are your ready mija" shouted Toni's mom hurrying her and her little brother into the car. "si mami" she replied jumping into the rear of the car and strapping herself into her carseat. Her mother was a beautiful woman inside and out, she had long chestnut hair that fell to her breast and tanned skin. Mariposa was her name, it means butterfly in her native language, spanish. Mariposa was just like a butterfly, gentle and beautiful yet fierce and tough. Toni had always looked up to her mom, she wanted to be just like her, she wanted to be as strong as she had been after Toni and her brother Mateo's, father left them, three years previous. He slammed the door behind him, jolting her awake, she climbed out of her small bed and tiptoed to the door, looking through the crack, she saw her mother sat by the door head in her knees crying. "mami estas bien?" she asked quietly, emerging herself from her darkened bedroom. "estoy bien, carnio papa y yo acabamos de tenet uni discusion" she replied confidently standing up, her eyes clearly bloodshot from crying. "an argument?" she questioned sensing her mother's apprehension. "yes baby, now let's get you back to bed, we don't want to wake Mateo do we" and that's the last time papi was mentioned, she missed him, but stayed strong for her mother. After all she was only three Her father was named Sam, he was an engineer, that's all she really remembered about him. As she grew he kind of just faded from her memory.

Once they had all packed into the small fiat, they set off, headed for a new life in Chicago. But they had only just made it out of the town when it happened. A large black pickup truck appeared from nowhere and hit them straight on sending Toni and her brother flying out of the car. She woke up minutes later, on a patch of damp grass next to a large sign, she got up and could just read it, being 7 years old. "Riverdale" it quoted "the town with pep" she looked behind her onto the car she had been sitting in only minutes previous, it was completely destroyed crushed up into a piece of metal, and that's when she realised her mother was gone, she curled up into a little ball next to her brother's carseat and cried into herself, her small frame shaking with each sob. She was tapped on the shoulder by a middle aged man, he was clean shaven and had a hefty leather jacket on his shoulder, a snake was seen into the back of it. "My name is FP" he said softly. "i have a son, jughead" he continued. "we'll look after you" he smiled opening his arms before she fell into them, she thought of her papi, how his used to pick her up in his big strong arms, her face illuminating with laughter as he swung her around. He picked her up and carried her to his motorcycle, she took one last look at her brother, his dark curly hair spread across his face, his eyes closed peacefully, his mocha hands still clutching his favourite toy.

And from then, the serpents took her in, they helped her recover and get over her losses, sweet pea, fangs and jughead quickly became her bestfriends and it all went from their, she became a fully fledged member at 13, her mother's latino voice in the back of her mind reminding her to follow her dreams.

flashback over

"she was..the strongest woman" Toni smiled a tear falling down her cheek. "you should've told me babe" Cheryl said gently wiping away the tears escaping from her girlfriends's eyes. The redhead felt guilty, guilty that she hadn't asked, guilty that her gorgeous girlfriend who she loved with all her heart had been keeping all this hurt inside for so long.

"can you read to me" the serpent whimpered. "of course princess" Cheryl answered reaching for Toni's favourite book 'conspiracy theories, don't believe everything you see" she knew the girl spent many of the hours in her day wondering if the moon landing was faked or if Michael Jackson was really dead. But Toni didn't care what the book was, just Cheryl's soft voice reading the pages while stroking her hair was all she wanted, it calmed her down and reminded her that whatever had happened in both of their pasts, it brought them together which was the best thing in both of their lives.

And every so often she would hear her mother, reminding her of how strong she was and how proud she was of her.
