A distant siren shook you awake. It was a bad habit after years in the police force, reacting badly to any sirens whatsoever. It was a gut feeling, instinctively telling you that this time, it wasn't just a siren. Knowing yourself to be right, you stretched your hand out for your phone, and sure enough, a sharp tone cut the atmosphere seconds later. Answering the phone, you held back a tired groan as the screen lit up like the sun itself.
"Ma'am, [S/N]. It's Eunkwang." A familiar voice sounded stressed on the other end. "I know it's 02:00, but it's urgent."
"It's fine Eunkwang." You rubbed your eyes and pushed yourself up from the bed, walking over to the wardrobe. "Send me the details and I'll be on my way."
"Yes, ma'am. It's strange, I'm telling you." He continued briefly, "We can't tell if he's still alive or not..."
You excused yourself from the call, knowing his further rambling would only confuse you further. Pulling on the black pants, shirt, tie and black jacket, you were soon out of the apartment, entering a lukewarm summer evening. Hopping into the car, you got the police details sent to you on your way displayed on a screen in the middle. By midnight, a woman had called in to the police reporting that a dead man was lying on the ground in a playground. The man was Lee Min-hwan, thirty years of age and known previously by the police for selling drugs. But not in this region, what was he doing all the way out here? You soon approached the blue and red lights in the distance, parking beside a strand of police cars. Jumping out, you were met by intense chattering and a large amount of polices investigating the sandy area. As you approached the fenced off scene, a woman eyed you but let you through. It had taken years, and a lot of hard work, but you and your partner had gained fame for your success.
"[Y/N]!" Eunkwang hurried up next to you, looking relieved. "Where's your partner?"
"She's flying in from Japan. Now show me the case?" You smiled briefly to the young policeman who walked you through the worn down playground.
"Well, it's a bit tricky... We still haven't been able to tell if he is dead or not."
"How are you unable to tell?" You frowned in distrust. Eunkwang was just about to reply but you stepped up next to the body lying staring into the sky. He was peaceful, as if gazing into a dream. The body was cold, you could see from the pale skin, and the man had no pulse... But..
"He is blinking?" You asked, shocked as the body began nodding to your words. "He can't be dead! He is reacting to what I am saying?!"
"But he is declared dead by our forensics" Eunkwang began biting nervously on a nail. "He has no pulse, he isn't breathing, no blood."
"I can't believe this." You gasped, "What is the death cause? I mean, he isn't dead, or well, he is but... What killed him?"
"Multiple knife wounds in abdominal area." Eunkwang pointed out some rather obvious flesh wounds, "It's possibly a revenge attack, as he was associated with The Mafia."
"The Mafia?" You understood why you were called in. The police force hadn't been able to get hands on the Mafia for years, and if this finally was a chance, they needed good hands in the case. "Alright, thank you Eunkwang. Give me a couple of minutes here and I'll get the evidence I need."
He nodded and excused himself to go talk to the forensics. Getting some time for your own research you took out a pair of black glasses and a set of gloves. One would suspect these gadgets to be no more than sunglasses and gloves, but were in fact interactive, and allowed you to analyze the surroundings of you in detail, as well as displaying them in the air in front of you without actually needing it physically. You could match the results directly to your database and sync it to other cases. You approached the body, inspecting it in detail without touching. Blood was found under his nails, perhaps proving a struggle. There was a faint blue husk to his throat, suggesting he had been choked, but that would not have killed him. Just as you were about to leave the body, you spotted a trace of ash on the man's collar. You looked around, seeing how the ash could be found as a trace. Deciding to follow it, it brought you to the edge of the playground where you spotted a trampled cigarette. Lowering yourself, you picked it up, hoping there would be saliva left on it.
"Found anything, [Y/N]?" Eunkwang yelled from a distance. You raised your hand as if to dismiss his words, then lifted the cigarette to your left hand, pressing the end of it against a circular area in the glove. A loading bar appeared in the air in front of you as the test analysed the cigarette. You held your breath.
-Analysis finished. Test results partial; incomplete DNA 53% match; Lee Jooheon.-
You drew your breath sharply. Was this the way to bring down the mafia?
"EUNKWANG!" You stood up and stared at him from across the playground, "Call in Lee Jooheon for interrogation!"
