"[Y/N]! Where are you going? Where is Jangmi?" Your colleague asked as you marched out from the crime scene with determined steps.
"She took an express journey to the den of problems." You muttered, ignoring the colleague more or less and jumping into the car. This certainly was a trap, you figured, but this time you wouldn't be wounded and unarmed, and Jooheon would not be forgiven for sending Minhyuk to kidnap your best friend. You were furious. Perhaps that affected your driving as you ended up parking outside the flat way quicker than you expected. For a second you stopped and tried to be reasonable with yourself, but that quickly vanished as you were not going to let Jangmi be taken by Jooheon and his men that easily. It was personal. Police training had taught you a lot, but reality even more. Stepping into the elevator you ensured your leather gloves were properly on and the gun was at ready, should it be necessary. It seemed as if you entered someone's dinner once the elevator opened, having the same code as before. There was no sign of a struggle, nor was there any screaming or shouting. You stepped inside and looked around warily, then down from the stairs no other than Jooheon himself walked, completely unaware of your existance. It felt as if your heart bounced up to your throat, and made it hard to breath. You had forgotten how you felt about him, about the kiss, about his scent... It was something you had tried so hard to forget, and then the slightest of glance made that effort all in vain as it washed over you. God, it ached in your heart.
Standing frozen had given the people in the flat time to move, and the next surprise shocked you. Jangmi and Minhyuk walked hand in hand down from the kitchen into the living room, only to stop and stare at you in an equal amount of surprise. They were clearly enjoying each other's company. You didn't know if you were angry, sad, disappointed or happy.
"Jangmi? What the actual fu-.." You began, but was interrupted as she began talking.
"No! No listen, [Y/N], this is not a betrayal!" She exclaimed, approaching you with a worried gaze.
"Not betrayal? You're dating a mafia leader, Jangmi! Do you know what I gave up to not do the same? I had to be loyal to the morals we portray, we represent the civilians, the children and innocents!" You began pladdering, feeling extremely hurt that she had managed to take a step you hadn't. "Don't you think I wanted that too?! But we're supposed to be beyond that!"
"You're wrong. I did not sell my soul to my profession, like you. I will not deny myself happiness because of what society deems right and wrong." Jangmi's expression darkened, "I'm just sad you weren't able to see that for yourself."
You didn't know what to say. Claiming she had betrayed society wasn't fair. She had simply managed to accept what made her happy, where you had refused yourself. Was it selfish to demand she did the same rejection? It hurt even more, thinking that she was happy and in love with someone, and you could've had the same but thrown it away. Minhyuk glanced over their shoulders, then tugged at her with a faint pout, having them both walk away.
With calm steps he walked down, most likely having been listening in from behind the archway. His hair was crimson red which clashed elegantly towards the black suit. He looked out of the window for several seconds, creating a painfully long silence. The moment he looked from the window and towards you, it felt as if all of the air was sucked out of you. You wanted nothing else but to be near him again. A silent tear trickled down your cheek, but you refused to acknowledge it. You wanted him to embrace you and tell you everything would be alright.
"Why... Why are you here.. [Y/N]?" He asked cautiously. How could he be so calm? You were exploding with feelings.
"Because Minhyuk ki-.. I thought he kidnapped Jangmi!" You took to aggression, using it as a way to protect yourself from showing any vulnerable sides. He shook his head.
"No. If you truly thought that was the case, you would've done it the official way, reporting it in and getting a raid here." His words exposed you. "You would not have gone all this way on your own."
"I..." You stammered, and suddenly his cold facade was faded; he looked just as pained as you did. Why did you cause this pain for the both of you? Why were you not allowed to feel love? Why did your profession go first, and force you to such suffering? He saw it too. He hesitated.
Stepping up next to you he took your hands and looked down at you. You couldn't take this any longer.
"Please, [Y/N], I can't be without you." He whispered carefully, "[Y/N], I love you."
It was as if your world shattered as he expressed himself, but that previous world was just a facade hiding reality, and reality was beautiful. You could no longer refuse it.
"I love you too, Jooheon."
