Scene 6
Me: Sunday went by so quickly, Dolapo and I spent most of it in bed and eating spicy noodles in a bid to recover from the hangover. Finally it was Monday morning and time for school to begin, I couldn't afford to be late for classes on the first day. It was 7:30am and the lazy Dolapo was still in bed snoring like a drunken sailor. I shook her vigorously so she could hit the shower because it takes her almost an hour to get ready.
Dolapo: what is it now??
Me: wake up my dear it's almost time for class.
Dolapo: leave me be oh!!!
Me: Wake up before I get water and pour on you. She lazily stood up and went to the bathroom. I was already getting dressed when Dolapo strolled out. Hurry up dear we are gonna be late for class.
Dolapo: i will be ready in ten minutes.
Me: We left the flat in time to make it to class and not be late, we arrived and got our usual seats. The class went on as usual and we took notes and paid as much attention as we could. It was five minutes to the end of the class when i noticed a familiar face at the door. It was Jide and he was smiling at me and of course i smiled back, the crazy Dolapo noticed and asked why i was smiling then followed my gaze.
Dolapo: what is he doing here? I thought we were meeting up with Sam after class.
Me: I don't know, i did not give him any details whatsoever. Jide was still smiling sheepishly and there was something very charming about his smile. The class ended and all the students went running out, we were right behind and i tried to walk as slowly as i could but it did not change anything because Jide didn't move an inch. We ran into him at the door.
Jide: Hello Beautiful!
Me: What are you doing here and how did you find me? I don't like people stalking me oh. In my head i was really happy to see him.
Jide: I just asked around for the most beautiful girl on campus and i was directed straight to you.
Me: As cheesy as that sounded i found it very charming and was grinning from ear to ear. Dolapo noticed and was nudging me with her elbow trying to knock some sense into me.
Dolapo: Vee we have to be somewhere right now.
Me: Yes that's true i stammered. But before i could say any more Jide held my hand and pulled me away.
Jide: I would like to take you out to lunch and please do not say no.
Me: At this moment I don't think I had the word no in my Vocabulary. Sure I said.
Dolapo: Vee??? What are you doing.
Me: I will meet up with you and Sam later on ok. I knew this was a lie. And I'm sure Dolapo knew too.
Dolapo: Sure thing.
Jide: Where would you like to go ma Cherie?
Me: Anywhere you want I said. There was an instant connection that made me feel very comfortable and I would have followed him anywhere but luckily he suggested a lovely restaurant just outside the school called Chinny's.He took my hand and led the way, as our hands touched I felt a shiver go down my spine. He had made a reservation so they were waiting for us. I found this very sweet that he had everything all figured out.
Jide: Hope you like the table?
Me: Everything is perfect I said. We both had Chinese fried rice and spare ribs, he did the ordering. He seemed to take charge of everything and I liked that in a man. He spent the next two hours wooing me and I quite liked it, I offered to split the bill but he was having none of that.
Jide: I've got this Veena, today is on me. Do you want to grab ice cream on our way?
Me: No thanks, I was too full to put anything in my mouth and I was trying hard to be as Posh as possible. Besides my car was still parked on campus and I had promised to meet up with Dolapo who I knew by now was going to have my head.
Jide: I will drop you off on campus, I'm sure your friend will be waiting.
Me: That would be nice, as much i would have loved to hang I thought it would be weird since we just met. Jide dropped me off hugged me and said goodbye. I had to force myself to pull away. He drove away slowly and I admired his sleek BMW. What am I doing I asked myself, I can not afford to fall for this guy. I called Dolapo and she had already gotten back home. I drove back alone and I walked into the flat, Sam was there wearing a frown.
Sam: So you are finally back?
Me: what's that supposed to mean?
Sam: I saw you drive off with that guy on campus. What's going on Vee?
Me: Nothing!! It was just an innocent lunch.
Sam: These kind of lunches are never innocent. Am I losing you Vee?
Me: Stop being paranoid, there was nothing to it. An argument ensued and no matter how hard I tried to explain to Sam he was really upset and stormed out. You need to make a choice Vee? You cannot have two men in your life he screamed as he slammed the door behind him. I sat on the bed with tears in my eyes, what am I doing I asked myself. Flashbacks of this afternoon came back and I forced a smile and there and then I realised that it was over between Sam and I.
