Welcome to Arkadia {3}

Chapter 7

"Pike's detail is still at it." Octavia told my dad through her headset. We were spying on Pike's people who left Arkadia and were getting what looked like soil samples. 

Sam had gone back to Arkadia to help dad keep an eye one everything there. He doesn't think he's cut out for all of this. He thinks all he's capable is the behind the scenes part ,like working the radio or computer back home. 

"Soil and water samples." I told him through my headset. 

"Any idea what they're up to?" My dad asked us. 

"No, but ,considering how heavily they're armed, I don't think they want anyone to find out." Octavia told him. 

I looked over the tree we were behind. "Crap." I cursed as I saw the grounder kid make his way in sight. 

"What is it?" Dad asked. 

"There's a ground kid." I told him. 

"Hang on." Octavia told him. 

Pike's men noticed him. Monty's mom ,Hannah, turned to face him. She had a smile on her face as she tried to wave at him. The kid just stood there looking shocked and scared. 

"Hello there. Don't be scared." Hannah called to the kid. 

One of Pike's men grabbed his gun. "We can't let him go. He'll tell his people he saw us." He told Hannah.

"Octavia, Rachel, please respond." My dad pleaded. 

"Hannah." The guy called out lightly. The smile fell from her face before she turned to him and nodded. 

The guy raised his gun. The kid's eyes widened before he turned and ran. Pike's people didn't just shoot him. 

"Fan out. With me." Hannah called as they ran after the kid. 

I didn't hesitate to jump over the tree and run in the direction that the others went in. I heard Octavia right behind me. My dad was saying something but I wasn't paying attention. Octavia steered us in a different direction. 

"They're going after the kid. We're trying to cut them off." I heard Octavia tell my dad. 

I heard a gunshot then footsteps of one person running. Octavia and I stopped. The footsteps were coming in our direction. As they tried to pass us, I reached out and grabbed the kid ,my hand over his mouth. 

The kid tried to struggle but I held onto him tightly. Octavia ducked in some bushes beside us. I ducked behind a tree with the kid still in my arms. 

"It's okay. We got you." I whispered to him ,trying to reassure him. "We won't let anything happen to you." 

We heard more footsteps. They stopped by the tree we were behind. I tensed up ,hoping we weren't going to be found. 

"We lost him." The guy that spoke at the river stated. 

"Double back to the river. He can't have gotten far." Hannah said.   

I quietly shh'ed the boy. He didn't move at all. I think he might have even been holding his breath. 

I let out a hiss of pain as a stinging pain landed on my forehead. I looked up at the tree. There was tree sap dripping down onto me and it burned my skin. I kept in the sounds of pain ,this wasn't the worst I've been through. I could deal with a little pain on my face. 

It took a few moments but I heard Hannah's footsteps leave. Octavia and I were now alone with the boy. I let the boy go to wipe the sap off my face as I moved away from the tree.
