chapter eight.

when we get back into the room my teacher yells for us to calm down. "where was I? or right. Matthew, Ronny, and Claire." I internally groan. how predictable was that? that was like something you see in a movie! of course Claire is in my group. I look over to her, and she's scowling at me. "wow Claire you're so scary!" I look over to who I guess is Matthew. he's a tall boy. he has big green eyes, and dirty blonde hair. he's one of those shy jocks. he has faded freckles, but not to many. he's cute. he's wearing a plain blue shirt with some jeans and white sneakers. I just realized I'm staring. he smirks at me then walks over. "hi Ronny I'm Matthew, but you can call me Matt." I look at his face. "I like Matthew better. it sounds...less boyish." he chuckles. his voice is husky. "aren't you shy?" he looks at me with confusion. "yeah, for the most part. why?" "because you aren't acting shy with me." "do you want me too?" I chortle. "I guess not." Claire makes her way over with our assignment. .

the assignment is to see which group can have people get lots of good chemistry. she said she paired us with people who don't usually like each other. once Matthew finished reading the assignment he looks up to me with sad eyes. "what?" "Ronny, you don't like me? why not?" I am puzzled. "I-I do like you. I think she put us together because we don't know each other." he looks at me relieved. why is he acting like this? "Ronny?" I clear my throat after I remember how to breathe. "y-yes?" "you're cute." I feel my cheeks get hot. "thanks." Claire makes a pretend puking noise. "ugh. can we please get to work. we have to answer these questions, and I don't feel like hearing Matt flirt with you." I defend Matt. "he is not flirting!" Matthew's eyebrows rise. "I actually am. am I not doing a great job?"

at the end of class we all agree to go over to my house tonight to actually work on our project. I walk to my locker with Mathew at my side. he runs the back if his neck. "so I'll see you later?...actually I can give a ride since we're going right after school. if you want." "sure sounds good." as he's walking away Jace stops at my locker. "hey. who was that guy?" I shrug my shoulders. "Matthew." "why was he nervous talking to you? did he ask you out or something." "no, and why do you think he was nervous?" "he rubbed his neck, that means he's nervous." I look at him, really look at him. "why do you care?" he looks caught off guard. "I just, just, you're my friend and I want to make sure guys who hang around you aren't douches and stuff." I shrug my shoulders again. "okay." I close my locker and walk away.

after last period I wait by the double for Matthew. I finally see him. he waves to me. then he jogs towards me. "hey Ronny, you ready to go?" "yup." I pop the p. once we get to my house I realize Claire totally blew us off. that- "Ronny, you're home!" "hi mom." she finally notices Matthew. "who is your friend dear?" her eyes are asking me, is he your boyfriend? Matthew puts his hand out. "hello ma'am, I'm Matthew. your daughter and I are doing a school project together." "oh sweetie, don't call me ma'am, it makes me feel old. call me Jen." "yes m-, haha, yes Jen."

we head up to my room and get to work. he asks the first question. "okay, number one. what's your full name?" "Verronica Louise Mayfield. and yours?" "Matthew Eugene Henderson. okay, um, what's your biggest fear?" "well, Eugene, I have to say my biggest fear would be bunnies." he rolled his eyes when I said Eugene. "your scared of freaking bunnies? why?! they're adorable!" "no they're not! those beety eyes, twitching nose, and giant teeth," I shudder. "terrifying." he laughs. "whatever. and yours?" "I'd have to say, giraffes, their tongues freak me out." "rriiight, and I'm weird for being scared of mini demons. you know, you remind me of a rabbit. the whole demon part at least." I laugh. "that's rude!" "your face is rude!" "your face is rude!" "Yeah, but I've excepted it!" we both laugh then get back to business. by the end of the night I pretty much learn everything about him. he left around eight. I wave good bye then close my front door. "he seems nice." "yes, mother, he's  nice little boy." I roll my eyes. then I go to the kitchen and cook ramen noodles. (I add soy sauce.)
