Hear Me

I close my eyes,

a short moment to myself,

before facing the people,

who are shouting, angrily.

I try not to show fear.

I am their leader!

But I fear them.

And I fear my responsibility.

They had accepted me at last,

when I'm not of royal blood.

They had begun to trust me,

and then I betrayed that trust.

They listened to me and now,

I don't know if they will.

But I will not run away.

Taking a deep breath,

I open the castle doors.

"Traitor!"

"Liar!"

"B—"

"F— you!"

I almost stumble backwards,

shocked at their hatred,

like a wave of lava,

burning my body.

I try not to cry.

I am their leader!

I take a big breath.

I step forward.

I lift my head,

straighten my back,

and I say,

"Please, hear me,"

but my voice!

My voice betrays my fear,

of the people and

it's quiet and timid.

I can't...

I can't—

"Quiet!"

The roar shuts the people up.

I turn to...

my Head Guard?

"Please, listen to her,"

he shouts,

the people stare, in shock.

"Give her a chance,"

says my doctor.

"Listen to her, please,"

says my maid.

They support me?

After everything I've done?

After all the mistakes I've made?

Tears well in my eyes,

my chest tightens,

but I won't cry.

So,

I close my eyes,

a short moment to myself,

and I take a deep breath.

The one who is my only love,

takes my hand and whispers,

"I believe in you."

I grip his hand and say,

now, with more force,

"Please, hear me."

The people are quiet as I talk,

they listen to my decisions,

they listen to my reasons,

they hear me.

I will not run away again.

I can be their leader!

I can be their Princess.

I will be.
