Of all the things we can feel with our minds and bodies, severe pain is the purest, for it drives everything else from our awareness and focuses us as perfectly as we can ever be focused.

DEAN KOONTZ, Dark Rivers of the Heart

Prologue

Closing the door behind me, I turned the lights on. I figured Nona must be asleep since all the lights were turned off.

Dropping my bag near the sofa I made my way to Nona’s room. I had gone Sam’s house for a small party and forgot to tell Nona. She must be worried sick by now.

I opened the door to her room; she was lying peacefully in her bed. I decided to wake her up since it was nine in the evening; she should have something to eat and take her medicines.

“Nona, wake up I’m home. Time to get up.” I said shaking her. Why won’t she wake up? “Nona wake up.” I said a litter harder this time. With a jolt I realized she wasn’t breathing. And in that moment my world came crashing down.
