Chapter 10

Caroline opened her eyes, reluctantly. She still wasn’t feeling very good even after another long sleep. “Good you are up.”, Stefan’s voice said from beside her. “Stefan. What are you doing here?”, she sat up on her bed and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. “First, drink this.”, he said and handed her a blood bag. She took it and relished every last drop of it. 

“Thank you. I feel much better.”, she smiled. Stefan smiled back. He had been worried sick about her. He didn’t know what was happening? Or where she was? Or how she was? She seemed, once again, lost to him. And he did not like that one bit. He leaned forward and hugged her. For the first time since she came back and he hugged her and after a moment Caroline hugged him back. The two friends just held each other for a few moments. Stefan finally feeling grateful and realizing that she was there. And Caroline happy to get him to just be around her without disappointment or feeling of betrayal. He let go of her. 

He sat beside her and began, “I am so sorry for the way I have been...but, but I was just so angry and I felt betrayed. You left without saying anything.” He tried using words to explain but he just couldn’t find many. 

“I am so sorry. I wanted to talk to you but I just couldn’t. You would have convinced me to stay.”, Caroline explained although it wasn’t necessary. Stefan had forgiven her but she would never be able to look past the fact that she had been so un-considerate towards someone she loved and cared about.

“Maybe I would have gone with you. I still don’t know why did you leave. Why did you leave?”, he asked. She sighed, she had to tell him no matter what he thought of her later, she began with her head hung low, 

“I couldn’t take it anymore. I just couldn’t be here anymore. Mystic Falls did not seem like home anymore. I was so tired of all the problems, surrounding us all the time. I just wanted an easy way out. I was a coward.” Stefan considered her words and teased, “Caroline Forbes, a coward! Don’t let anyone hear you say that.” She looked up at him and laughed a little. 

“Seriously Caroline, you will never be a coward. All of us thought of walking away one time or another. None of was strong enough to actually do so.”, he said. 

“Yes but what kind of person leaves a friend in time of need?”, Caroline asked. 

Stefan shook his head and said, “No. You are not guilt trapping me. You were an amazing friend to all of us for so many years. You have been through so much because of us. You were there when I needed you. When Bonnie or Tyler or Elena or Matt needed you. Don’t do this to yourself. And you are here now. For Bonnie and Jeremy and their kids.” 

“Oh no we should get going. Bonnie is in the hospital and Shiela must be so very worried.”, Caroline said getting up and walking to her closet. 

“They are all fine. Shiela and Alaric are at their house with your mother and Jeremy is at the hospital looking after Bonnie. He said he would call as soon as something happened. You don’t have to go to her right now. She is unconscious but stable. You don’t have to worry.”, Stefan explained trying to slow down his friend. 

“Okay but what exactly happened. I was going to come there directly but Klaus brought me home. Argh...-I want to-” “Yell at him, I know”, Stefan said stopping her mid-rant, “Actually I told him to get you home. You were in no condition. You were vervained and you needed rest and blood. Plus we were in a hospital, all that blood and people would have drove you crazy.” 

Caroline sighed, “Thank you. Where is he by the way? I have a few questions for him.” “I don’t know. Guess he went back to New Orleans. He brought you here and then told just got in his car and went away.”, Stefan said. “Okay.”, Caroline nodded her head. She would call him and ask what was it all about, but the main concern now was Bonnie. “Tell me what happened with Bonnie?”, she asked and Stefan told her everything. After that she told Stefan what happened with her. “Hmm...you were held for ransom. What did they want from Klaus?”, he asked to himself. Trying to link all the pieces. “I don’t know. But I am more worried about Bonnie. This is the second time she is in the hospital. She is even more at risk now that she is human.”, Caroline shook her head. “Stefan, I know we would just have to wait and Jeremy would call if something happens but lets go there. I want to be there for her. I feel better now.”, she said. “Okay. I’ll wait.”, Stefan said and walked out of the room. Caroline took a bath, changed and left with Stefan to be with her best friend.
