Chapter 8
The conversation of me and Marcus during lunch swims through my head.
"What would you say if i asked to go out with you?"
That may not be the exact words, but they mean a lot to me. No one ever likes me, besides James, but now i'm starting to question that. I want someone who likes me for who i am, and that's what Marcus likes, i'm almost positive.
The phone next to my bed rings. It felt like my heartbeat was at its double thumping rate.
"MARCUS!" I scream. I skid to a stop when I reach the phone, and pick it up with such force, that it drops to the ground. I pick it up, slowly this time.
"Hello?" I say into the receiver.
"Jess? It's James. I just want to say I'm sorry for wha-" James? No way!
"You're not sorry James. I saw you with Anna, and you know I did, don't lie to me. I'm expecting a call, so goodbye." I slam the phone down and hang it up. I think of James, staring at the phone in awe, and saying how he messed up big time and that he really loves me. Well I don't give a crap. He can mope. I don't care. I love Marcus. I don't care if it's his first day. I don't care that i might be taking advantage of the situation. I don't care! Why did I say no when he pretty much asked me out. Why oh why oh why am I so stupid?!
I collapse onto my bed and start thinking. I think about Marcus, and James, and the pizza place. I think about what happened between me and James, and how I met Marcus. I think about me grabbing his hand when he falls off the bus seat and into the aisle. I think about how many great times me and James had together. I try to wipe James clear out of my mind, but nothing works. He's stuck there like glue. I stare at the phone some more, but I give up at around ten thirty.
"Jessie? Sweetie?" I get off my bed and open the door to my mom almost in tears.
"Mom, whats wrong?"
She sighs, and it made me feel like i was the intruder in her life. "Jess,"
"Mom, tell me!!!"
She closes her eyes, thinking about how to put her words, but then looks at me. "Your dad is coming."
I wait for her to tell me this is a joke, that she's kidding, but she doesn't. My dad? The dad that left me when i was little, and never came back? That dad?
"No! No he isn't. Not if I can help it!" I try to get past her, but she's like a brick wall.
"Jess, he's on a flight already. You can't stop him."
I just stare into her face, still waiting for her to shout, "April Fools!" Sadly, she doesn't.
I march past her and up to my room, where I screamed into my pillow until I got so lightheaded that I passed out on my bed.
