Chapter 13

All I saw was Marcus, lying limp under James' body. Fists were flying everywhere, and blood just appeared more and more often. Marcus was helpless, laying on the ground, bloody and broken. I run over to James and try to yank him off. I saw a blur, and then I felt a stinging on my cheek. I touch it, and my hand comes away bloody. James had punched me! I wrap my arms around his waist, and pull hard. He comes a little loose, so I keep at it. I started screaming.

"Someone call 911! Hurry! I need help! Someone!"

Ten teachers come over and tell me to step aside. I jump out of their way, and they carry James away. I can barely look at Marcus, crumpled and bloody on the floor. I kneel beside him, and beg him to stay with me. Nurses ran into the gym and put him on a stretcher. I walk with them to take him to the ambulance. They wouldn't let me ride with him, so I ran home. When I got home, my mom was watching the television.

"Mom! You need to help me!" I scream.

"Jessie! Why is your dress all bloodstained? What happened!"

"Mom! James picked a fight with Marcus and he's in the hospital. I tried to pull him off, but he punched me. You need to give me a ride to the hospital! Now!!"

"Not yet! We need to clean you off!"

"Not now Mom! Marcus might die! I know he has some broken bones! The nurses and doctors will clean me off. Right now, all I'm worried about is Marcus!"

I must have convinced her enough, because the next thing I knew, we were speeding down Mason St. When we reached the hospital, I received a lot of disgusted looks.

"The blood" I thought. I ran on. I found his room, and his doctor knew exactly who I was. He ran to get a rag, by my mom's request, and then he told me what was wrong with Marcus.

"Two broken ribs, and a broken nose. He'll be fine, though. I fixed him up. He'll be out in three days." He walks out of the room and beckons my mom to follow. He wanted us to have some time.

"Marcus, I-" I couldn't find the right words. "I'm so sorry. I should've-"

"Jess, you didn't do anything wrong." he says. I thought he would sound horse, but he sounded completely normal. "James is just a jealous freak, and that's his fault. He mistreated the most beautiful girl alive."

I felt myself blush, and I kissed him full on the mouth. It didn't hurt him, because his nose was all patched up, but I was careful anyway.

"You have to go now Jess. I don't want you to start crying." He recommends. I feel my eyes water, and take his advice. I reach for his and, squeeze it gently, and walk out of the room. My mom was outside, but I told her I wanted to walk.

"You are not walking Jessica. It's way too cold. I'll drive you. And I promise. I won't ask you a thing."

That made me laugh. I climb into the car, and we drive home.
