Chapter 12

My mom is waiting downstairs, while I get my clothes on. It's prom night, and I'm really excited. Marcus is going to be here any minute! I pull my dress up over my nylons, and slip my feet into my pumps. I put my hair into a tight bun, with loose curls dangling down. I didn't put on too much makeup, but there's enough for people to see it. My mom went shopping without letting me know, and got me a diamond necklace, that rests right in the middle of my chest. It sparkles almost as much as Marcus's eyes. Marcus! He's going to be here! I've seen so many movies, that I know when he rings the doorbell, my mom will invite him in, and I will walk down the staircase like a beautiful princess. Except, I won't be a princess, I'll just be Jessica.

I hear the doorbell, and I thought my heart would beat right out of my chest. I hear the door open, and then I hear voices. I position myself at the top of the staircase, and take my first step. The voices cease when they hear the click-clack of my heels. I almost trip on one of the stairs, but I catch myself before anyone notices. When I reach the bottom, Marcus just stares. I smile and stand in front of him.

"You, you look beautiful." he coos.

"Thank you. You look quite handsome yourself."

He was wearing a white tux, with a black tie. His hands were by his sides, and his hair, oh his hair. It had been cut, but not so short that I couldn't run my hands through his bouncy curls.

"Picture time!" my mom yelled. Of course. I forgot. The other part in the movies was how parents insist on pictures before you leave and then start crying and whispering about their babies growing up like no one can here, but it seems like the entire neighborhood doesn't even have to eavesdrop for the sound to reach their ears.

We pose for a picture, and then run out the door as fast as we could.

I stand and stare. A limo! Marcus rented a limo!

"I thought you'd like it." Marcus whispered in my ear. He takes my hand, and opens the door for me. I climb in, and he climbs in with me. I just look at him.

"How can you not afford a T.V. but you can afford a limo?" I ask.

"Magic."

I laugh and we smile and chat all the way there. When we reach the school, he takes my hand, and helps me out the door. Arm in arm, we walk threw the pile of people waiting for their dates. When we get inside, the music filled our ears. Lots of hip hop and dancing songs. Me and Marcus just stood and talked. When a slow song filled the gymnasium, he held out his hand and whispered,

"May I?"

I touch his fingertips, and follow him to the center of the room. Everyone made room for us, because it just so turns out, that we were voted cutest couple. While we were dancing, I got lost in his eyes. I could swear I heard him say my name, but his mouth didn't move. He leaned, and so did I. We weren't dancing anymore. We were swaying with our lips connected. I curled his hair around my fingers and he was fiddling with the loose strands of mine. All around us, people were clapping. When something hit me hard on the back, I open my eyes. James!
