The next afternoon I am once again in the bleachers watching the lacrosse team. Both Nolan and Liam are out on the field, warming up. Scott and Stiles are there too, chatting about something that was concerning them and not-so-casually sneaking looks at Liam every once in a while.
They are threatened by him, and I find it hilarious.
After a couple one-on-one scrimmages initiated by players just wanting a little practice before the tryouts, coach sends them off to do a couple drills then some laps around the field.
Liam is first to finish, but unlike of the second one done, who came ten seconds after him, he acts like it is a casual stroll or something. Second place sits on the grass to get some water and catch his breath while Liam is immediately doing curl ups. Nolan comes in the last wave of them, the group that coach calls “unbelievably pathetic.”
Stiles Stilinski is in dead last and collapses on the grass. I’m still not quite sure why coach is so fond of him.
As Liam moves to push ups and Scott and Stiles are once again watching him in an annoyed awe, Nolan jogs up to me.
“Good run, my dude,” I congratulate him with a high five.
He smiles sadly and says, “not good enough for first line. But there’s three more years…”
“Hey, pessimism, the real tryouts haven’t even begun!”
“But coach has already made his favorites clear,” thus sending a jealous look in the direction of Liam. “Is he the one you hung out with last night?”
I nod, “wasn’t really hanging out. I just napped on his couch all afternoon.”
“He’s pretty full of himself, don’t you think?”
I have an incredulous look on my face right now, I can tell. He’d never really struck me as super cocky but then again he is still practically a stranger. “He probably thinks he has something to prove, being new and stuff,” I decide to defend him.
“Speaking of naps,” Nolan changes the subject, clearly not wanting to agree with me. “These kids are insane. Like, there are always at least two screaming, I’m dead serious, at all times. "
“Oof.”
“I’d suggest trying to get new kid to let you stay at his place for a couple more days,” there it is again; the jealous tone that I’m sure he thinks I’m not catching. But at least he is taking into account my serious sleep deprivation and would rather I get sleep at Liam’s house while he’s jealous instead of making me go over to his and deal with his crazy cousins. I still feel bad, though.
“Okay. If you think it’s smarter, I’ll ask him,” I agree hesitantly. “Why and for how long are the kids here anyways?”
“Uncle Hal has heart surgery today so Aunt Lena has to give him all of her attention and stuff. My grandpa was supposed to watch them but he bailed last minute. I think we’re supposed to take them back on Saturday.”
