“Ouch. Ow, ow ow ow,” Liam grimaces as the nurse prods his foot.
There’s a lump there that shouldn’t be; it’s bright purple and blue and making me squeamish.
“Is it broken?” I ask, looking away from the ghastly sight and to the nurse.
She frowns and tries a different area of the foot, earning a soft “gah!” from Liam.
“Oo, mm-hmm,” she steps away from her patient and turns to Scott, Stiles, and I. “I don’t know. Could be broken, could just be a bad sprain. I don’t have the technology here to tell though. I’m thinking you need to be checked out at the hospital.”
Liam throws himself backwards, pouting, “great. Just great.”
“Is there a way for me to reach your parents or am I going to have to call an ambulance?” She asks him.
“Uh,” Scott raises his hand as if he’s in class. “Stiles and I can drive him there.”
“We can?”
Scott elbows his friend, “yes, we can."
The nurse hands Liam some pain meds and leaves, having nothing else to do. I force Liam to sit up and plop down next to him.
“So much for sleep, huh,” he mumbles, apologetic.
I shake my head, “it’s okay. I’m pretty sure this is more important.”
Scott mentions something about someone named Kira to Stiles before leaving the room, saying he’ll be back.
“Girlfriend?” I ask.
Stiles raises his eyebrows and shrugs, “we don’t really know.”
“Huh.”
He goes silent and proceeds to text someone. Whoever it is is making him pretty angry. He lets out an exasperated whine. I’m secretly judging him of course, he’s weird.
Liam reaches for his foot and yelps in pain again.
“Don’t touch it!” I exclaim.
“It’s totally broken,” he complains, giving me the same sulky look he’d given the nurse.
“Why is everyone I know so pessimistic?” I ask myself, putting on an air of disappointment.
He isn’t even ashamed, flicking me and saying, “you’re more pessimistic than me.”
I return the favor and retort, “and I need someone optimistic to balance it out!”
Scott returns, a pleased glint in his eye that the others don’t notice but immediately lets me know that something heated went down in the hallway. “Come on,” he announces, him and Stiles helping Liam up again.
