"Why are you staring at me like that?" I find it rather odd, my childlike dad sitting cross-legged on the bed before me.
"You think you can beat the vampires?" He asks me, furrowing his brows while tilting his head to the side. Dad takes a portion of quesadilla in his hands, chomping on it while I take a small bite of mine.
Tansy has been apologetic, that her son was fascinated with me. His curiosity was like a kitten, only skittish when I stared at him for too long. He'd been the one to offer and bring me dinner, as he made it himself.
"Why are you frightened by them?" I ask as I've never once seen a falter from my dad all the years growing up with him. He was my protector, my guide in showing me what controlled strength is in the world...
...mom held the beauty, showing me, everything can be if given the right opportunity to grow.
Dad shrugs his shoulders and says, "Mom told me that they killed my dad," he picks at the cheese that's hardened on the plate. There's fear and vulnerability that quakes beneath his voice as he says, "They're horrible...I'm scared they'll kill mom."
Hm...
I lean forward and ask, "Is Lyra horrible?"
Dad gasps as he looks up, shaking his head while standing up for the beloved of his mom.
"Are you scared Lyra will kill your mom?" I ask him, tilting my head to the side and watching his features shift slightly.
"Well...no..." he's not as sure of himself or the way he thought of vampires just a moment ago.
So, I explain to him, "Just because a vampire has done bad things, doesn't mean they all. Their actions are solely the responsibility of the one acting out. If you keep your vision narrowed and staring down a dark tunnel, you'll never see the light outside."
"The light?" He asks, looking up at me with uncertainty.
A small giggle leaves my lips, outstretching my hand as I touch the center of his chest. His cheeks turn bright red, his mouth agape as I say, "The light is always inside you and you'll always balance the darkness..."
Mom...
The void is much darker in you.
It's a coldness that seeps into my skin, these words that slip through my mind are unlike the feminine words only hours prior to me arriving in the room. Clutching at my chest with my free hand, the hand that touches dad's chest slowly slides away.
"Dot?!" Dad is staring at me with wide eyes and terror.
A shrilled scream leaves my lips as I fall to my side, holding my chest as parts of my nervous system shut down. It feels so cold...so...
You are alone.
"Mom!" Dad yells as he scampers off the bed, my eyes transfixed on the door as my skin becomes numb.
You have no one to balance you.
Dad runs back to me, grasping the edge of the bed as he searches my eyes. Tears are in his eyes, seeing the fear growing with each passing second.
"Lailoken! Get away from her!" Tansy yells, rushing forward as her hand grasps his shoulder.
You will die alone.
"What is this?!" Cynbel is staring in complete shock, seeing Grandpa Sebby kneeling next to dad, though Tansy attempts to pull him away.
"Lailoken, now, get away!" Tansy tries again.
