Ok literally dick greyson is one of those seemingly high functioning depressed kids like u know the ones that no one can tell is super depressed bc they seem so happy and excited all the time? Yeah. He grew up in a big circus where u always had to wear a smile and he felt like he'd ruin everyone's day if he showed how he felt so he's spent his whole life trying to mask all his negative emotions.

No but seriously he's like one of the only extroverts in the whole batfam. Literally bruce takes him in and is shocked by how well he's dealing with his family's death compared to him. Like sure he's not A-ok but he's definitely healthier than bruce ever was. Bruce knows he'll be alright in the long run. And he's terrified every second of dick's childhood that he'll ruin the good in that boy. Because Dick Greyson is such a happy, kind, sweet, good boy. And Bruce is terrified he'll turn into him, a cynical, angry, hurting man. And sure, as Dick gets older he loses a little bit of that childhood wonder and gains a little darkness of his own. But Bruce also gets a great deal of healing he wouldn't have otherwise had. They both grow because of each other.

The first time Dick slipped up and called him dad, it was when he was really sick, and he decided to go out on patrol anyways even though bruce told him not to, and he almost got really bad hurt. So they put him on sick medicine and as he was nearly knocked out and he'd grabbed hold of Bruce's hand and was murmuring about how cool of a dad he was. Bruce was in tears btw. Like real, genuine, happy tears. He remembers thinking something along the lines of "im never going to let anything snuff out the light in this boy. He's going to grow up strong and happy if it takes everything in me to get him there."

Because Bruce was mostly homeschooled and rich and out of touch with the world and introverted he really had no clue what he was doing at first with dick. All these random snacks kept appearing with no explanation (Bruce always gave him too much money for going out with his friends so he used the extra money to stock the house with things he actually wanted to eat. Because a twelve year old circus boy doesnt want to snack on caviar or other strange, foreign, rich foods.) (Dick probably makes more than enough jokes comparing himself to haruhi fujioka.)

Anyways eventually they spend most morning just eating hot pockets anyways, much to alfred's relief because he was also getting tired of cooking literally every morning. Especially for people with such changeable schedules. ("sorry alfred there's a crime happening but im sure this stew you worked all day on is delicious. Hey bruce can we get mc donalds on the way home?") (that was jason not dick alfmcmskdndn dick isnt that rude he would have packed some of the stew for the road. Jason on the other hand has always been v rude and dramatic.)

The amount of times they've sat on things that shouldnt be sat on eating 2 day old cold pizza and drinking flat soda at 4 in the morning, two hours before they're needed for a serious Wayne Enterprises event, halfway in pyjamas halfway out of their costumes is,,,, surprisingly very often. Or unsurprisingly, rather. (Its years later when cass is told by the psychiatrist Bruce has her seeing (just to make sure she's coping with everything) realizes thst cass has issues with insomnia that the whole bat family realizes they all for one reason or another have the same troubles. Anyways from that point forward there's a specific cabinet in the kitchen full of melatonin/sleep aid gummies and chamomile tea and other calming, sleep inducing stuff.)
