DOP stands for Direct Object Pronoun and IOP stands for Indirect Object Pronoun

The direct object is the person(s) or things(s) that receive the action of the verb.

DOP answers the question: WHAT?

Here are some examples of DOP.

1. Amanda tiene el libro. (Amanda has the book.)

For example, in this sentence, if you ask WHAT?The what is the book. Amanda has what? The book.

2. Estoy comprando unos zapatos. (I am buying some shoes.)

These DOP statements can be written as...

1. Amanda lo tiene. (lo = el libro)

2. Los estoy comprando. (los = unos zapatos)

Now, moving on to IOP.

The indirect object is a word or phrase that informs to whom or for whom something is being done.

IOP answers the question: TO WHOM?

Here are some examples of IOP:

1. Juan me compra un regalo. (John buys me a gift.)

In this case, the answer for TO WHOM will be "me". John buys a gift for whom? For me!

2. Ella le escribe una carta. (She writes him the letter.)

Adding on to the statement above, here is an example.

Yo le compro un coche a Amanda. (I buy a car for Amanda.)

Yo le lo compro. (lo (DOP) = un choche)

(CHANGE le -> se)

This is the correct way to write the sentence: Yo se lo compro.

We need to change "le" and "les" to "se" when used with DOP because of the pronunciation. :)
