As I said before, there are two different forms to use when talking about something in the past. I already made a chapter that explains about the present tense, so now I am going to talk about the imperfect tense!
Here are the regular conjugations for imperfect tense:
-ar -er/-ir (all accent)
yo: aba yo: ía
tú: abas tú: ías
él, ella, usted: aba él, ella, usted: ía
nosotors/as: íbamos nosotros/as: íamos
vosotors/as: ibais vosotros/as: ías
ellos, ellas, ustedes: iban ellos, ellas, ustedes: ían
e.g. Los niños jugaban al baloncesto. The children used to play basketball.
jugaban: jugar -> use -ar conjugation
Here are the irregular conjugations for imperfect tense:
ir(to go)
yo: iba
tú: ibas
él, ella, usted: iba
nosotors/as: íbamos
vosotors/as: ibais
ellos, ellas, ustedes: iban
ser(to be)
yo: era
tú: eras
él, ella, usted: era
nosotors/as: éramos
vosotors/as: erais
ellos, ellas, ustedes: eran
ver(to see)
yo: veía
tú: veías
él, ella, usted: veía
nosotors/as: veíamos
vosotors/as: veíais
ellos, ellas, ustedes: veían
So...when do we use imperfect tense?
1. habitual/repeated actions ("used to")
2. events/actions that were in progress ("was/were")
3. physical characteristics
4. mental/emotional states (e.g. era hambre)
5. telling time (ser).
6. age (tener)
7. simultaneous activities ("while")
~A/N~
Hope this helped! :)
