[hoseok's pov; convenience store; monday]

am i blushing?

...

"happy birthday, jung hoseokie, happy birthday to you!" i heard my mom sing softly, as a bunch of little candles shone on the pretty yellow cake in front of me.

it had a citrus scent, with little candy sunflowers littered on it, accompanying the thin candles that looked like candy canes, only with orange stripes and not red ones.

i couldn't keep my eyes off of it. she made it for me, and that made it even more beautiful.

"make a wish, hoseok-ah" she said, looking at me with a smile.

i closed my eyes, thinking of a wish and curling my lips to blow out the candles.

a huff of air passed from my mouth, making the little lights disappear from sight.

my mother started clapping happily, making me smile even more.

"what did you wish for?".

"i can't say, mom! if i do, it won't come true!" i said, pouting and earning a sweet smile from her.

"it's okay, hoseokie, you can always tell me" she added, patting my head.

i nodded, as she stepped away to grab the cake knife to finally cut this pretty thing up.

although, its beauty will be no more. and that's kind of sad, isn't it?

"i hope that whatever you wish for will come true" my mother said calmly, cutting into the yellow cake. "you're my precious angel, who's always so disciplant and bright, and you always make me so proud, hoseok-ah" she continued, grabbing a little porcelain plate from the side and placing a big slice of the now cut cake into it, "so have a big piece, darling, you deserve it".

i can't say how i felt from those words at that moment.

i would get praised a lot at school by teachers, as well as my nextdoor neighbors who'd i help with some chores, and i would always be consent with the compliments.

but when my mom would say stuff like this, i'd feel like my heart became even more alive and strong. as if i could lift a building up. i'd feel like a superhuman.

"are you blushing, hoseok-ah?" my mom giggled, taking a piece of cake for herself too.

i looked at her with surprised eyes, touching my cheeks from confusion.

"that means you're very happy, right?" she asked softly, brushing her small hand against my hair.

i simply nodded, putting a piece of the velvety cake into my mouth.

and i felt happy.

...

what does this mean? why am i reacting to a handshake like this?

i felt... comfortable. and that scared me.

"w-wanna pay up? i'll buy you something, since i gotta return the debt in some way" i said, slightly stuttering and letting go of his hand.

yoongi nodded shyly, stepping aside and letting me through the aisle. for a moment i was taken aback but eventually, stepped forward and made my way to the cashier, hearing yoongi's footsteps follow me.

as i started putting each item on the counter, ignoring the clerk's slightly salty looking face, i noticed how much food was in yoongi's basket.

"you eat that much alone?" i asked, looking at him with a surprised face, jokingly.
