‘’life is a piece of cake, when you let God do the baking’’
I woke up really early on Friday, I did my makeup and fixed my hair. When I looked at the mirror, I saw a familiar refection. I could recognize the person I saw, and that person looked like someone whom the bitterness from my heart had tried really hard to hide from the world. That person was a brave, beautiful, bold and breathing person that I really was and not the fake person my past had created. When I was done dressing up, I borrowed Angie’s selfie-stick and took pictures of myself, and posted them on my WhatsApp statuses. The gossip about you which people indulge in when you look beautiful or when you’re successful can build you a better and stronger reputation. I walked into class with a new look, different personality but the same
person I had always been but everything felt like a new chapter.
I don’t know if it had been my imagination but I had a feeling that Michael was staring at me, but when I looked at him he was looking somewhere else. I was really glad that the week was ending, I wasn’t really a fan of learning. After class which was a physics lab, I took my books to the room where I found Angela preparing for the night; she quickly gave me the dress she had picked for me and a pair of expensive shoes. I took a quick shower, dressed up, fixed my hair and makeup, and before time we were on our way out. We walked to the car pack, it was around 18 hours and dusk was at its peak, boy was it chilly and I had forgotten to carry a sweater. Angela pointed at a packed new black sports car, I was amazed but I just followed her to the car. The back door opened and Michael called Angela in with a smile, I should have gotten in but after seeing Michael I hesitated. Derrick was driving the car so Angela sat in front with him, so I got into the back seat. We drove off, there was awkward silence in the car so Angela asked for my favorite songs so I gave her my phone and she played the songs as we drove to our destination. Throughout the drive to the restaurant Michael and I didn’t say anything to each other, in fact we both looked in opposite directions. If I had known that Michael would be there, I wouldn’t have accepted to go out.
We first went to the Chinese restaurant for supper, the four of us chatted and had fun. We cracked jokes and quoted funny lines from movies and imitated cartoon characters like SpongeBob square pants, but despite the humor I never laughed at Michael’s jokes and he never laughed at mine.
After supper we went clubbing, there was a fancy club called Tutors in town where most students enjoyed going to so that’s where we went. It was only 9pm so the night was still young, Derick and Michael went to the pool table to play pool. Angie pulled me and we went on the dance floor, I was really shy so I couldn’t dance. I watched Angie dancing then later on Derick joined us and Angie and he started dancing, Michael was still at the pool table playing pool. I went and sat on the sofa in the VIP lounge, I started chatting on my phone replying to the messages people were sending me on social media.
Just when I thought things would be okay Thelma and her friends walked into the club, Michael went and welcomed Thelma and joined Derick and Angie at the dance floor. I felt really left out but it wasn’t a big deal, as long as I had my phone I was good to go. A man walked to the counter opposite the sofa I sat on, I took a quick glance at him and then looked back to my phone. The man was really good looking, probably aged 26 and a working class if I were to judge him by his outfit.
I was really glued to my phone, but I could feel the cute guy’s eyes on me. When I looked up our eyes met and he smiled at me, oh my God he wasn’t just a man who had the cutest smile! I smiled back at him, and the next minute I saw him walking towards me.
“Hey gorgeous, can I buy you a drink?” he asked as he sat next to me. I saw Angie smiling at me really excited, I smiled back at her and focused on the handsome man who sat next to me.
“It depends.” I said to him smiling and flirting back.
“Your wish is my command, my lady!” he altered.
I was really flattered, “If the drink will be as sweet as you are tthen I will take it.” I told him. He called the bar man for the most expensive wine and without hesitation the bar man sent somebody to bring the bottle of wine and two wine glasses.
“By the way, my name is Fred. I guess yours is Elizabeth right?” he asked. I laughed, “No I’m not, what makes you think so?”
“Well with your looks, I would assume you were named after the queen of England” he said as he poured the wine in the glasses.
“I wish I was, but my name is Muwemi it means--” I started, “The beautiful one” he cut in.
I nodded and laughed, “How did you know?” I asked him.
“Well it was just a wild guess, considering your lavishing looks.” He lied. I laughed then sipped on the wine, it was bitter sweet so I winced.
