August 9th, 1757
-Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton's 261st birthday
Elizabeth "Betsy"/"Eliza" Schuyler Hamilton was born on August 9th in the year of 1757 to Catherine Van Rennsselaer Schuyler and Philip Schuyler in Albany, New York. She had a Dutch heritage and her family was one of the most prominent families in the state of New York. Her family was rich and owned many slaves, so she had grown up around slavery. As a child, she was considered a "tomboy" and was always seen as an impulsive individual with a strong will. She had met Alexander Hamilton while residing at her aunt's home in Morristown, New Jersey, where the Continental Army was staying in 1780. They married on December 14th, 1780 at the Schuyler Mansion. The two had remained together until the tragic duel of 1804 that ended Alexander's life on July 12th. Eliza had lived to see the the invention of the telegram and the steam locomotive as well the beginnings of the American Civil War. She had passes away at the ripe age of 97 on November 9th, 1854.
August 25th, 1797
-The publishing of the infamous Reynolds Pamphlet
In late August, Alexander Hamilton published The Reynolds Pamphlet that went into detail of the affair between himself and the wife of James Reynolds, Maria Lewis Reynolds. It included the blackmail payments given to James Reynolds as well as some of their letters. Needless to say, this had tarnished his reputation and vanquished any chances of him becoming the president.
August 27th, 1782
-the anniversary of John Laurens' passing
John Laurens was born on October 28th, 1754 in Charleston, South Carolina to Eleanor Ball Laurens and Henry Laurens. His father was a wealthy slave owner in the south. He was the eldest of five children. As a child John expressed an interest in science and medicine, but yielded to his father's wishes to study law in 1774. On October 26th, 1776 he married Martha Manning in England. But in December of 1776, John left behind his pregnant wife to fight for his nation in the American War of Independence. He became friends with the Marquis de Lafayette and Alexander Hamilton("friend") as an aide-de-camp under General George Washington. He is remembered for his detest of slavery and efforts to recruit African-Americans into the army. However in August of 1782, he was shot down from the saddle of his horse and succumbed to the bullet wound. He is known as one of the last casualties of the war.
Looks like a fun month...I detest August.
